H vs. HR vs. HS in hotel listings/star ratings
 

I'm trying to research some rates on the web and can't figure out what these H/HR/HS distinctions refer to. I know it is probably something obvious, but alas, the world is not very obvious to me this day!<BR><BR>Thanks in advance.

I looked it up. One one Web site, HS meant 'hotel and spa' and on another it meant hostel. Can you e-mail the place to ask?

Ann,<BR>Here's a key:<BR><BR>H - Hotel<BR>Hs - Hostel<BR>P - Pension<BR>HR - Hotel residencia (no dining facility though perhaps a breakfast room)<BR>HsR - Hostel residencia (with no dining facility though perhaps a breakfast room)<BR><BR>The "H" codes are not ratings; they simply identify the type of accommodation. In Spain, hotels (and only hotels) are rated from one to five stars by regional tourist offices. The star system indicates the type of amenities the facility offers.<BR>

Ann, I was also a bit confused by the Hotel, Hostal and Hotel-Residencia distinction too. For what it's worth, based on my limited experience in Madrid and southern Spain in 1994 and 2000, a two-star hotel is generally nicer and has more facilities than a two-star hostal. Good luck!

In a hostal (HS) many rooms do not probably have bathroom inside. Bathrooms are usually shared while in hotels it is probably the exception.<BR>HR (Hotel Residencia) as Wes mentioned do not offer meals although some of them have breakfast service. Something I learned last time I was in Albarrac&iacute;n where most hotels are two stars being so wonderful is that most of them are old houses restored and usually small. They would have to have installed elevator to get three stars and they didn´t, therefore almost no one has that distinction.
