GYTHION and MYSTRAS
Is a visit to Mystras really worthwhile?
If so, can you visit Mystras from the top and work your way down (is there a road to and an entrance on the top?) ? also, does anyone know what a return taxi to Mystras would cost? |
It is very worthwhile. My Greek friend insisted that we see it and we were glad that we did.
We walked down from the top and then walked back up. I don't recall it being difficult. This is a Byzantine site, a nice contract to all the ancient antiquities you will have seen. We spent the night in Sparta. A return taxi from where? Sparta? Nafplion? or the top of the hill? |
Gythion
tks |
I just called the Radio Taxi center of Gythio to ask for the price. They estimated a cost of 80 Euro, for a roundtrip transfer plus waiting for 2 hours.
However this is just an estimation, as they do not have fixed prices and endprice will depend of the taximeter, but i think it gives you an idea. |
I concur Mystras is a great visit. There is probably a local bus from Gythion to Sparti where you can catch a taxi. Or perhaps a tour from Gythion.
I am a little concerned with the two hour wait period for the taxi. As I recall we were 4 hours at Mystras. We too started at the fortress at the top ( yes there is a road up) and worked our way down. Unfortunately that meant we had to walk all the way back up to get our car. At least using a taxi allows you to meet the driver at the bottom Here is our Peloponnese album. Mystras is the 86 through 97 images. https://www.flickr.com/photos/stanbr...7632094108982/ |
thank you !!!!

Maybe i should add, that it was me who asked for a 2 hours waiting of the taxi, it can be as long as you will need of course, but it will affect the end price. :)

It's been several years but I recall taking a bus from Gythion to Mystras. The bus stopped at the parking lot at the top of the site & picked us up at the bottom on the road back to Gythion. No walking back up, just needed to know what time a bus was returning to Gythion & where the spot was on the road for pick up. The bus does not wait at the parking lot. It returns to Gythion & other buses come & go.

Forgot to say........yes it is worth a visit & it is easy to get there and back!

Yes you can take the KTEL bus from Gythio as well.
In that case you will have to go to Sparti first, and take the local bus to Mystras, after a wait of 1 hour. Here is the website of Ktel Lakonia : http://www.ktel-lakonias.gr/?q=en There are 2 busses that leave in the morning, and would give you time to visit Mystras. Look for the route Gytheio - Sparti I called the local Ktel office and they said that there is a bus from Sparti to Mystras 1 hour after the arrival in Sparti, however it is not mentioned in the timetable. :) |
Here is more information about Mystras on the official website
of the Greek Ministry of Culture : http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh355.jsp?obj_id=2397 |
thanks for all the useful info !

You can ask fellow travelers with car for a ride back up. I would have happily helped out a hitch hiker.
