That comes across as snarky, you know. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and answer.

I went in 99 and 2005. Signs were minimal. The first time we had no guide, we hadn't brought a tour book with us and really regretted it. We walked around in all the areas that were open to the public, and there were not many signs. My brother asked the guards a few questions in Italian but their answers were pretty brief.

<[can't remember the first!]>

You may not remember your first trip because it was kinda boring. I remembered it was boring and it was my motivation for getting a guide.

Among the things we didn't find on any signs--but did learn about with a guide on our second visit:
--whether there was a sea battle and how it worked and when you looked out over the middle of the lower level
--that there were many elevator shafts (we saw them before but didn't know they were elevator shafts), and how they worked and what they transported
--who sat where and what class of people they were, how they got there
--what it would have looked like at the time
--what snacks were for sale in the stands
--what happened to the Colosseum after the fall of Rome
--why there are holes on the columns and why the earthquake did the damage it did

These are just some examples of what we learned on our guided tour. There was a lot more, and also she took us through the Forum.
