Guided day trips Bad Ischl/St.Wolfgang/St. Gilgen area

We will not have a car and may have an interest in some guided day trips in area. Any information appreciated. I have read about trips coming from Salzburg, but we are not going there.Thanks.

I can't answer your question about guided day trips, but I can tell you of my experience. I travel a lot solo and using public transportation. Last month I based in St. Gilgen for 4 nights. From Salzburg I traveled by bus to St. Gilgen. The bus station in Salzburg is steps away form the train station. There is a bus information booth just outside the train station. From St. Gilgen I took a boat over to St. Wolfgang one day. Another day I went by bus to Mondsee then on to Salzburg because there is basically nothing in Mondsee except the church from Sound of Music. I went to the TI there and the clerk there told me the church was the only attraction. Another day I went by boat again to St. Wolgang to the Shalfberg stop. I took the steam train to the top of the mountain. This June the weather was warm so I didn't freeze at the top of the mountain.

You could also take a day trip to Hallstatt by bus although I stayed there for 2 nights. All the things I have mentioned are easy to do on your own. This is such a beautiful area. And all the people are very helpful.

I don't think you need a guided tour of any of these towns. I was in all 3 about 2 years ago. Just get a decent guide book and follow the sites listed. You can probably find the 'sites' to see on TripAdvisor, with a google search, or just picking up a tourist map at the TI in each town. I found Rick Steve's book to be good for these towns.

I, too, spent 2 nights, in Hallstatt before moving onto St. Wolfgang.

Have a great trip! It is a beautiful area!

scat and joann, thank you. You have been helpful with some of my other questions also. We will be in St. Wolfgang four nights, but only have three days to see the area. The more I research the more I want to see. Just thought the perfect guide might get us to more places in a more expedient manner. I know we want to go to St. Gilgen and definitely Hallstatt. I think we go by boat to St. Gilgen and will need to go back to Bad Ischl to take the train or bus to Hallstatt.
