Guide recs Krakow to Przemysl
 

Want to take a day trip from Krakow to
Przemysl(on border with Ukraine) to get back to family roots. Any recs for English speaking drivers/tour guides. I know it will not be cheap but don't want to make any mistakes or have problems with this adventure.

For a day trip, you'll be biting of a large hunk of real estate. It's a straight shot from Krakow tto Przemysl, which I drove some years ago. Highway is in good condition, many good sized towns to go through, divided part of the way. However, you're looking at a round-trip drive of about over 300 miles (approx.500 kms). If you're looking to do some genealogical search in P, there won't be much time. Have you done any research on your roots thus far?

Most town halls in Europe can help you with familly records(with your guide as translator), but I would recommend getting in touch with either The Jewish Genealogical Society's "Shtetl Seeker" if Jewish, or FEEFHS if you are not.

I rechecked mileage..more like under 270 total roundtrip, rather than as I originally said 300 miles. Not too much of a difference..but still a long day if inclding some serious resarch to uncover any of your history. My wife's mother's birth village just over today's Polish border in Domachevo, Belarus (2008) and previously her teen years in Miedzyrych (75 miles east of Warsaw in a 1993 visit) each took the better part of a day. Wishing you success.

We are thinking about a similar trip in Oct. and have just started planning. I, also, am trying to work on a family search. My father was born in Lozavaya, Ukraine. I would love to be in touch with you if possible.

By the way, Lozavaya (Lozova in Ukrainian) is a long way east from Polish border....deep inland Ukraine, 80 miles south of Kharkov. I estimate about 1,000 kms (600 miles) from Polish border. Train from L'viv to Kiev to Kharkov and another connection south to Lozova...or plane along same route, with changes. Coincidence, my grandma was born in Konotop, also "near" Kharkov, came to USA in 1899 at 19, carrying with her the family samovar (so many did). My son keeps it polished up and possesion among family members is rotated annually.

Your planning will not be so simple...start now. (You do not need a visa for Ukraine).
