I can't help with a guide, but I also don't think you really need one. We were handed a fairly detailed map and with that and a couple of guidebooks pretty well figured the whole place out without any problem.

It's a beautiful place - enjoy!

I would call Context Rome tomorrow, if you're willing to pay 140e for 2 and you are free on May 20, 24 or 31.
If they have the spaces available you can book with them.
If your guide is Darius Arya it's a big bonus. He has lead an archaeological dig in Ostia and also in the Roman Forum.
Even though I have been to Ostia 3X, I still tried to book an Ostia tour with him last March. But with no luck :(.

I have never seen private guides at the Ostia entrance but I have only gone in the off-season. And for some reason the excellent audiotour wasn't available last March.

Here's another vote for NO guide. It's a great place to explore and a nice break from the busy city. I think the ruin markers and the pamphlet are plenty. You could probably read about it online too before you go. This looks to be a nicely done informative site: http://www.initaly.com/regions/latium/ostia.htm

I took a group of 17, chaperones and seniors, there last September. We very much enjoyed it. I'd say we were there about 2 hours and that was enough. We especially liked the ampitheater ruins and the snack bar has terrific gelato!

I second the vote for Context Rome and Darius. I had a private tour with him in February, and there's NO WAY I would have had even close to the same experience on my own.He is currently working on a dig there and knows it like the back of his hand. (It's a big place!) ((f))
