Observation: such popularity must be deserved.

Maybe BigDuvDave doesn't need to work for a living (see previous thread: "Is everyone here immensely wealthy?")

But lest we get too impressed with ourselves here, the actual number is 254 messages from 164 unique individuals yesterday, May 11, 2000.

I suspect that Dave made the mistake of counting all messages posted on any thread that had a new post yesterday (thus counting old messages on those threads).

If I had to guess, this site has 5 to 10 unique visitors for every person who actually posts. But it would be interesting for Fodor's to let us in on the actual data. I'm sure the webmaster can spit this out in seconds.

For all I know the ratio could be as low as 1.1 or as high as hundreds. Both extremes seem unlikely.

Translated into unique visitors per month or year, I'm guessing 2000-3000 per month, possibly 10,000 to 20,000 per year. This is fewer people than show up in a single season to see a game of even the least successful minor league baseball team.

Not intended as a putdown. Just the facts, as they may or may not be. We are a small community, and that doesn't diminish what a good community we are.
I can't help thinking that these are the sort of facts that get used against one when one is trying to deny that one is a Fodor's addict. Not that I would be one....

Dear xxx -

Your are right - I don't have to work for a living. I worked 35 years and that was enough.

You are wrong - I stand by my count of 441. I opened all the threads dated 5/11/00 and 5/12/00, (at 1:48 AM) and counted only messages which had a post date of 5/11/00. Did you open the threads dated 5/12/00? ( since you did not post your message until 10:01 AM).

Because of so many posts,This is probably the worst time of year to post a question on this forum.
By the time you get back to see if there is an answer, you find that you are three or four pages down-Lost in the big black hole!-- since many don't have the time or inclination to go paging down.

xxx stands (probably) corrected. You're right. It didn't occur to me to look for messages that got additional postings after midnight. But I trust that my rough ballpark math is correct as to how many people GENERALLY "live" and visit here.

And did you factor in the time difference? If I post at 11:30pm in the Central (US) time zone, Fodor's server counts it as 12:30am (Eastern). Just to confuse matters further....

What a great thread, you could not make this up! It's so banal....I mean some of these people must be checking their faeces for fibre they have so much time on their hands.

Bill:

What do you mean "by the time you get back to see if there is an answer"?

Where would you go?

Once you come here, you're not supposed to leave, Bill. You're not taking that awful methadone and trying to escape our "community" here, are you Bill?

And Tony, that low-fiber liquid dietary supplement that we put into our feeding tubes makes it quite unnecessary to perform the task you mentioned.

Tony, if they are doing what you suspect, they will have a lot more than time on their hands.

Tony -

Thank you for taking your time to read this thread and to add your thoughts.

Actually, I was amazed and heartened by the large number of people who are willing to post questions and answers. Weren't you pleased with this sense of helpfulness?

Dave It just amazes me that the number of posts this site gets in a day may be as much as the Australia site gets in a year!!!!
