Group Excursions from Carcassonne?

I'm going to be in Carcassonne for a few days in May. I would like to know if there are any group excursions/tours that start from there? Like maybe to the fortresses? Or to villages? In England there are often private tour companies that take you off the beaten path to villages and such for maybe $50. Anything equivalent in the south of France? It's just me, so I would want a group tour and not private as that's too much and at that point it would make more sense to rent a car.

First off, why are you going to be in Carcassonne "for a few days?" A few hours is more appropriate.

Not sure what you mean by "the fortresses." Is it the Cathar castles/ruins that interest you?

There are of course innumerable tours available in the south of France (which encompasses a vast area - what part of the south of France is of interest to you?), but the best way to see it is to rent a car, plan your route, and drive yourself.

tracker - It sounds to me like you would like to do a tour of some of the well known Cathar castles like Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens and Quéribus. I would agree with St. Cirq that it is much easier to get around in this region if you rent a car. You'll just see so much more that you can't do with either a tour group or public transport. You can try contacting the tourist office in Carcassonne and ask them. I would call rather than e-mail as you'll get a much faster and better response. Here is the tourist office website for Carcassonne:

I think you're going to find that most tours are private tours with a fixed price and they'll be more cost efficient if there are more members in your group to split the cost.

Here are a few more websites you might find useful:
