ground transportation in Scotland

We will be going into Edinburgh from the states in July. We will then stay in B&B in Stirling Scotland for 6 days.

1. Question: What is the best transportation to Stirling. We would rather get a car in Stirling for the 6 day period

2. Question: Is there direct train route from Stirling into London?

I hope someone has some kind answers for a weary "travel planner"!

If you are renting a car - maybe just rent in Edinburgh and drive up to Stirling.

Let me ask you first - Why would you rather get a car in Stirling? The easiest place to pick up a rental car is right at EDI. All the agencies are right there and the airport is on the direct main route to Stirling w/o having to drive in any Edinburgh city traffic.

Yes you can take a train from Stirling to London.

was posting at the same time as steviegene. I understood you to mean you are flying directly into EDI. If so, get the car there.

Or do you mean you are arriving in Edinburgh (city as opposed to airport) by train from down south? Even then, I'd still probably take the bus out to EDI and get the car there.

We were a little hesitant about driving in Edinburgh since this is our 1st trip to UK.

We were also planning to leave from Stirling to go to London.

Any advise would be appreciated...

A quick check shows trains from Stirling to Kings Cross station in London as follows;
9:05 with a transfer in Edinburgh, arrives London 2:53
9:34 with a transfer in Edinburgh, arrives London 3:44
10:30. no change, arrives London 3:57.
Obviously there are more than these trains

"We were a little hesitant about driving in Edinburgh since this is our 1st trip to UK."

As I mentioned - if you pick up the car at the airport (EDI) you will not be driving in Edinburgh. The airport is west of the city and on the direct route up to Stirling. It would be easier to get used to the car/driving on the wide divided highway to Stirling, than it would be on the narrow, congested and steep streets in Stirling itself.
