Grotto open @ Lindenhof?
Has the grotto re-opened at King Ludwig's Lindenhof Castle?
|
hi there,
I havent been to Linderhof but I took a look at the site (http://www.linderhof.de/ - also nice in english). They didnt tell anything about a closed grotto. But they didnt tell anything about an open grotto. Hm ... Is there any? I dont know. Just take a look and perhaps You have to ask them by mail. have fun Gar |
Hi Geordias,
everything is open, although the main entrance is covered in scaffolding, We were there last week, and I think that the restoration should be finish by next year. Rgds, Cova |
The grotto is actually faux--an underground lake surrounded by rocks. Ludwig would sail about the lake in a swan boat while listening to music by Wagner, of whom he was a great fan. The grotto is wonderful to visit, especially on a warm day, but don't miss the Persian-style pavilion either. In fact, see everything at Linderhof that you can--it's fascinating.

That grotto was so interesting! I have been to all of Ludwig's castles and I don't think he was so mad!! Just eccentric!!
|
I really enjoyed the grotto too.
Perhaps poor people are mad; rich people are eccentric? :-D |
Exactly!! That is why he got a bum rap!!

Our first trip to Linderhof was in August 1970 on a bright sunny day. The grotto was great. The fountain was gleeming and the castle looked fantastic. Have been back three more times in the last 30+ years but that initial trip was still the best.
Enjoy that area of Germany! |
