"grieving statues" in the Jardins des Tuileries

Hi all

quick question here. I've likely seen these statues a dozen times and taken photos nearly as many... but I don't know who made it/them.

it is the guy with his head in his hand, butt nekkid.

anyone? anyone? bueller? bueller?

"it is the guy with his head in his hand, butt nekkid."

Do you mean Rodin?

cigalechanta Jun 16th, 2004 08:03 PM

He was in the Rodin museum, has he moved?

Scarlett Jun 16th, 2004 08:10 PM

The THINKER is in the Rodin gardens but there are statues in the Tuileries by Rodin.

flygirl Jun 17th, 2004 01:41 AM

no no, not the Thinker, I'd definitely know that one. ;-)

this is a guy, standing, hunched over kinda, on a tall pedestal, in the Jardins, head in hand.

hang on, I'll put a few up on ofoto:

"....some modern sculptures have been placed around the gardens, mostly works by Giacometti, Ernst, Moore, Raymond Mason and a couple of colourful Roy Lichtensteins"

Does that help any?

I tried a Google image search, and a web search. I found one image but the caption was generic.

Someone IN Paris is going to have to walk up to that statue, note what the placque says (if there is one), and report back here!

sfowler Jun 17th, 2004 09:39 AM

Fedex me a ticket and I'll be in Paris tomorrow :D

I tried searching too, couldn't find a "directory" for the statuary in the Tuileries.
Do you recall approximately where the statue is?
It's not necessarily labled of course, but wouldn't it be nice if there WERE a plaque?

The sculpture is called "Caïn venant de tuer son frère Abel" and is by Henri Vidal. Voyez:

Bravo, mvor, that's it!!!

flygirl Jun 17th, 2004 10:51 AM

thanks to both of you, that's the one!

cigalechanta Jun 17th, 2004 10:59 AM

rjw, how did you locate it?

rjw_lgb_ca Jun 17th, 2004 11:06 AM

Cigalechanta: I did a Google search on "Jardin des Tuileries" and looked for a French-language website with any displayed keywords like "artiste(s)" or "vue" or "photos" or "sculpture(s) française(s)". I was guessing that the French sites would be more likely to catalog the works in the gardens.

Travelnut Jun 17th, 2004 11:19 AM

Whew. We can all get back to work now, thanks!

palette Jun 17th, 2004 11:59 AM

I have a photo of this same guy - now I can update my photo label. You guys rock.

flygirl Jun 17th, 2004 12:09 PM

OK, just so Travelnut has an excuse to knock off early, I put up two more pictures. please check 'em out and name that tune! (they may well be on the same website as above)

cigalechanta Jun 17th, 2004 12:10 PM

Thanks, rjw, for answering. I looked at some French sites but didn't find it.
