It's official, we have a deal, the negotiations ended and the danger of Grexit does not exist anymore. Greece stays in the Euro. No worries for tourists travelling to Greece this summer. Have a good time!

If you do go to Greece don't pay cash for services unless you get a receipt, a proper printed one, with the VAT quoted on it. If you don't you will be aiding the black economy and making it even harder for Greece to recover. They must learn to pay taxes like everyone else or their misery will just carry on for ever.

Of course it remains to be seen if they ratify the agreement, along with several other European countries which have to put it to their parliament for agreement.
A couple of Greeks I have spoken with wonder why they bothered to vote on Sunday.

I would suggest that Greece was always going to be there and the people were always going to be there, so keep going, take a bit of extra cash and enjoy it is a great place for a holiday.

Is Grexit off the table? No.

Should it worry tourists? No.

It's not just Greeks but Italians and Europeans everywhere who are wondering what meaning voting and democracy have anymore within the Eurozone. But, paradoxically, grass-roots democracy remains stronger in Greece than it does almost anywhere else within the Eurozone, and Greeks are continuing to struggle to exercise their democratic rights within their parliament and the ballot box.

From the point of view of investors, economists and voters, Grexit is certainly not off the table. But as mentioned above, it has never been a rational reason not to go to beautiful, beautiful and price friendly Greece.

1. Asking your public the question and getting the right answer to that question isn't democracy.

How about a vote : how many of you want 0% income rate rates?

2. The Grexit threat isn't over, the parliament have to vote on it. There is little support for the deal.

3. Wasn't part of the deal the requirement for VAT to uniformly applied throughout the Greek Islands? Some of the islands are silly expensive now, add VAT onto those prices and they become some of the most expensive locations in Europe.

Grexit is not off the table. The Greeks don't want it, and most European nations don't want it, but there's a long way to go before Greece's outlook is clear. Until Greece gets real debt relief, they will be in some danger of leaving the euro. And, it's not clear, yet, that Germany and the "creditor bloc" are going to agree to any significant debt relief, despite the pressure being applied from Washington, the IMF, France, and Italy.

Still, the only issue for tourists will be if the banking situation begins to impact areas of the economy that touch on tourism, such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation. It hasn't really done that yet, but I don't think you can rule that out as a possibility. I would never have expected the ECB to squeeze Greek banks the way that they have in order to try to force the Greek government to do what the EU wants. I always expected the decision to come to a head and be resolved, and never expected Greece to be stuck in limbo, quite this way, for quite this long.

Right now, I'd have to say that a tube strike in London, or an air traffic controller strike in France, probably have an equal or greater chance of seriously impacting your vacation plans than the Grexit issue.
