Grenoble, calling Larry J

Hi Larry,
I read your message from February where you stated you were going to spend a weekend in Grenoble.
I will be spending a weekend in Grenoble in June. I'd like to stay close to the center of town, and have airco in my room (and double glazing) for noise control. I e-mailed the Angleterre tulip inn and never received a reply (though I can reserve a room through the Tulip Inn site, but they don't have the weekend special tarif)and the reservation form to the Grand hotel doesn't go through. the Ibis is situated inside a mall, not sure I'd like to stay there but the price is good and they have airco.
Where did you stay? how did you like the town?
Thanks,
Keren

Surprisingly, Grand hotel contacted me and I booked a room there.
Any feedback on Grenoble will be great.

Keren:

I stayed at the Hotel Ibis which is near the center of town on the river and close to the train station. We could easily walk to anyplace in the center city area from there. For details go to the Accor hotel chain website: www.accor.com

I like Grenoble very much. I spent 3 days there. Take a bus trip to one of the villages higher up in the Alps. I went to Bourg d'Oisans and like it very much. I also went on up higher to the ski station Aurais d'Oisans. It is very beautiful there in the winter with all the snow and the rugged Alpes.

You can easily spend a few hours hanging out in Bourg d'Oisans. It is very pretty there and has many shops, restaurants, nice mountain stream through center of town, rugged mountains surrounding city etc.

The center city of Grenoble is very nice. The mountains surround the city and the river is very scenic through town. Take the gondola ride up to the bastille to enjoy the fantastic view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Also there are miles and miles of hiking trails that start at the bastille and wind up into the mountains. Grenoble is a very large city and seems to stretch for many miles through the valley.

Have fun.

Thanks, Larry, for great information. I will also spend about 3 days in Grenoble, arriving from Paris at 11:30 on a Friday. I already bought a ticket for a concert that takes place at the Maison de la Culture, to which I'll probably have to take a taxi or tram, it seems it's not located in the centre of town.
I'll check the bus to Bourg d'Oisans and I'm glad there are hiking options from the Bastille, I love doing that.
I ended up reserving a room at the 3-star Grand hotel, for about 65 Euros a night.

Keren,

If you like Italian there must be 30 Italian restaurants one after the other on the opposite side of the river from the center city. This is in the part of town called "Porte de France". We went to a couple of them and found the food good and the prices very affordable.

Have fun,
Larry J
