Sorry Michael, you are the glorious exception!

I know this was an older post, but I just got so much information from it. Thank you! Everyone that responded gave such great information! I have decided I am going to plan a trip to Greece next spring (end of May) and have started doing some preliminary research, as I have no idea what I exactly want to see. Early searches seem to indicate that it's a safe place (mostly) for a single, early 50's female to travel so I will keep doing my research. Again, thanks for all the great info!

I'm a solo female who spent this past May in Greece -- no problems whatsoever! It'll be a while before a post my trip report, but here's my primary planning thread, in case it gives you some ideas in the meantime

beth, u should know Greece is a perfect place for a woman traveling on her own -- sometimes I've taken along "travel pals" but have done 3 trips solo. You have also chosen the PERFECT time to go = weather is ideal, water is swimmable, greenery everywhere (but no rain), everything's open, nothing's crowded. Also, Greeks are in a great mood, out painting their boats & store-fronts, plenty of time to chat. And they Do love to talk especially the guys .. you know how, in USA, when a woman turns 40 or so, she suddenly "becomes invisible"?? Not in Greece, I've chatted on & on with men of all ages, the secret is just to say How Fascinating, and Tell me More.
Do hunt up some guides at the library -- EYEWITNESS: the Greek Islands (plus Athens), and ROUGH GUIDE to GREECE are both good. Rick Steves good on DIY i Athens. If you have 2 weeks, you can see/do a lot without rushing. Come back when you have a few ideas, and we'll help you decide. |
I also visited Greece solo three years ago, aged 55, for four weeks, in May. It is, as TJ says, a great time to visit, and you will have a wonderful trip!

I can't resist asking.. do you really think that Greek men are that dumb to fall for this "secret" ? |
I would also suggest Monemvasia while in Nafplio. It is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese and it is linked to the mainland. The medieval castle town is beautiful....

To Clausar: I didn't say they were dumb, I shouldn't have called it a secret, but just a tip. All I meant was that most Greek men love to chat, (unlike most American men) and they don't limit their conversations to women under 40 (unlike most American men). I'm trying to pay you a compliment, sir.

We are so glad we included Olympia on our first trip to Greece.

kja Waiting patiently for your report!

@ sundriedtopepo: I appreciate your interest and your patience. :-) Work has been incredibly hectic since my return, so please don't hold your breath. But I will get to it when I can -- I'm hoping within the month.
