Greek luxury hotels

My husband and I are planning a 25th anniversary trip for June and I think we've settled on Greece (as opposed to Positano and capri?????) Any comments on that decision? In Mykonos we're considering the Mylonos Grand or Myconos Grace Hotels. Does anyone know which is more luxurious? Positives or negs. for either?
Also trying to decide between Santorini (is there a true luxury hotel there???) or Lindian Village in Rhodes?
Suggestions would be appreciated!

Greece is a wonderful place for a romantic trip. I love Rhodes, and especially Lindos. Not sure about the hotels you mention. I would expect Rhodes to be a bit less crowded than the smaller islands. Rhodes Town is also lovely to wander around.

Hi 4aces,

As for Santorini, there are some nice hotels there. My boyfriend and stayed at the Anastasis Apartments in Imerovigli. They have a honeymoon suite which is beautiful and the view is absolutely breathtaking. We loved our time there and it was very hard to leave. Not exactly sure what you were looking for as far as amenities go, but I thought that place might be worth checking out.

Have a great time wherever you decide to go!

I think Santorini has a number of "true luxury" hotels. Katikies and Perivolas are supposed to quite posh (with prices to match), but I think there are many others.

In Athens you should check out the NJV Athens Plaza Hotel. In May 06 we were the only Australians staying there as far as I could tell. Mostly wealthy Greeks and New Yorkers. Somehow our travel agent got us an amazing upgrade to a suite in this truly beautiful hotel!! It is right on the square new the parliament, you can walk to everything in Athens that you will want to see. Enjoy!!

Grande Bretagne in Athens is world class luxury. For such a special trip, why not go for it??!!!

congratulations!!

There are several luxury hotels on Santorini. One of them is Perivolas, but after our stay there two summers ago, I can't recommend it. Another one is Katikies, which from what I've seen and heard, seems like a much better choice. There are other properties, too, that are very nice. Hopefully, Brotherleelove2004 will see this post and respond to it since he's a real authority on Santorini.

As far as the Grande Bretagne goes, we've stayed there a few times. Yes, it's a great location and a lovely property,( the restaurant is excellent and offers a panoramic view of the square and the Parthenon) but you should know that room size and quality vary a lot. It's possible to spend upwards of $700 US for a mediocre room with a view of an interior courtyard.

Hi,

I think that Santorini is a better choice than Rhodes for an anniversary. I would give up Mykonos for Rhodes, but not Santorini. You have a couple of wonderful suggestions already and I will add that Starwoods has a new property in Oia called, Mystique. You will have a fabulous trip. Enjoy.

On Santorini check Oia Castle, Mystique, Andronis Suites, Mystique, Perivolas Villas, Kirini, Katikies Hotel, Suites of the Gods, Tsitouras Collection and Santorini Princess.

From what I hear, Mykonos Grand is the best on the island. It may be very windy that time of year on that part of the island. You may want to check the www.tripadvisor.com reports.
I agree with the Katikies recommendation on Santorini.

Thank you everyone! Especially Will...those were my inclinations as well. Are we better off just stying in Santorini for the week? I hate packing and unpacking, but I wouldn't want to miss an experience!?

I would skip Mykonos unless you're into crowds and the party scene. It is a zoo in the summer months, much more so than Santorini.

billbarr Jan 16th, 2008 01:38 PM

Mykonos in the mid-summer months is very busy, as is Santorini. In fact, I found the latter to be more so.

There are many more things to see and do on Mykonos than simply staying in it's town though and I am not just talking 'beaches'.

The Mykonos Grand is probably the better of the two you have mentioned. On another travel board I use, the Grace was way too heavily promoted long before it even opened its doors. That led to suspicions by users on that board. Last week I read that it had won an award for the best designed European hotel. The competion had closed long before the hotel had even finished being constructed. Again, questions were asked how the win was possible.

Two hotels to check out, that are located at Agios Ioannis where the Grand is, are the Apollonia Resort and the Hotel Saint John. In town, perhaps the Mykonos Theoxenia or the Hotel Belvedere may meet your requirements.

Thanks for everyones help!!!! We'll go to Positano and Capri instead. I think it makes more sense for us! ANy restaurant recommendations there?

Does anyone know of a good private boat company that would transfer us from our hotel in Positanto directly to our hotel in Capri? or wapproximately how much that would cost?

travelerjan Jan 20th, 2008 10:49 AM

Now that you've switched to an Italy question, had you not better post it under heading including words like Italy Positano etc.?

Italy experts don't often look at postings with "Greek" in the headline.

What a shame that some negative posts have put the OP off visiting Greece. :-(

My husband and I went to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini for our honeymoon and to the Amalfi Coast (specifically Positano) and Capri last summer. Santorini and Capri are my favorite places on earth. In terms of beauty Santorini wins....in terms of activities (restaurants, shopping, nightlife, people watching, etc.) Capri wins. To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with Mykonos. If you end up going there, make sure you go there BEFORE you go to Santorini so you're not disappointed. We stayed at the Perivolas on Santorini, which was extremely nice, but I think Katikies is the most luxorious. Both are in Oia.

Happy anniversary!

Last time we were on Rhodes, we stayed at the Ixian Grand - it was in the middle of a refit then, but is now complete, and a work colleague who has just come back says it is stunnin. The website is

Elsie,
I wouldn't give up on Santorini just because of a few negative posts. It a must see place to visit.
If you do end up going to Capri and Positano. I suggest you looking at the private boat transfers on www.capri.net. You can take them from Naples to Capri or from Capri to Positano. My wife and I did this on both routes. One thing you should remember, the ocean can get very rough. We had no problems but if your not comfortable with rough seas, I suggest you take the ferry.
You can email each boat transfer company about the fee's. If you choose this option.. I would confirm a few times.
Will
