Greek Itinerary for Athens and Santorini Island
Looking for suggestions for an itinerary spending 3 days on Santorini and 3 days in Athens for the beginning of July. I'll be with my 14 year old granddaughter. She is interested in shopping, history and swimming. Also would be very appreciative of some suggestions of where to stay on Santorini and in Athens. Thank you,

With an interest in history, I would encourage you to consider including Akrotiri and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira in your priorities while on Santorini.
You will have to make some difficult choices with only 3 days in Athens; I would think the Acropolis, Museum of the Acropolis, and National Archeological Museum would be priorities. I would also recommend the Museum of Cycladic Art. Too many other options to name!
If you don't already have them, I strongly recommend the Rough Guide and the Michelin Green Guide.
Enjoy!

Another enthusiastic vote for Akrotiri, but in July try to get there when they first open at 8am so you beat the crowds. And if the two of you are hikers you can hike in to Ancient Thera on the mountain above Kamari Beach, or hike the clifftop trail between Fira and Oia. That's also something to do in the early morning to avoid the heat, and hike towards Oia so you'll have the sun at your back and not in your face.

We returned about a week ago from 2.75 days in Athens, traveling with our 16 year old daughter; my trip report is under my forum name for all of the details if you are interested.
To write that there is a lot of history in Athens is a gross understatement; you'll have to plan your sightseeing thoughtfully. The weather and tourist gods were ever in our favor with sunshine and mild temperatures, and zero crowds, for our marathon sightseeing. In July, Helios (and people) will be bearing down on you, something to keep in mind.
We rented an apartment in Plaka and found the location ideal for sightseeing, shopping, and eating. On a previous school trip to Athens, our daughter and classmates were able to swim at Sounio Beach with Poseidon's Temple in view as a day trip from Athens; with your itinerary you may not have the time, though.
I hope you find this information helpful.
