Greek Islands off the Italian Coast

We once bumped into a fellow traveler who raved about Greek Islands off the coast of Italy. She told us of the mix of Italian and Greek art, architecture, food and culture. We've been trying to locate those islands and combine a trip to Italy and the islands. Any ideas or great memories?

Corfu-Kefalonia and the 'gems' ,Paxi.
It is easy to reach Corfu from Italy(Venice,Ancona) and then from Corfu tou plan an island hopping with local ferries or on a rented sailboat .

The Ionians are my favourite Greek island group. As well as Corfu, Kefalonia and Paxos, there's also Zakynthos, Levkas and Ithaca.

They aren't as easy to get around as some of the other groups, because there is no ferry service linking them all, but I read earlier this year that there were plans to start domestic scheduled flights between some of them. A shorter trip from Italy would be the ferry from Brindisi, rather than Ancona.

Some links -
www.foi.org.uk
http://dir.forthnet.gr/14-7-en.html
www.gogreece.com/travel/ionia.html
www.corfu-net.gr

his past summer I did an itinerary that was 1 night Athens, we drove through the mainland to Maeteora (2 nights), took the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Corfu, (5 nights there), then took the 24 hour ferry from Corfu to Venice and spent three nights. It was a great combination of Greece & Italy (obviously mostly Greece).

Do you remember the name of the ferry company that travels between Venice and Corfu?

I took Minoan's "PASIPHAE PALACE." It was 90 Euro for an airplane seat at the end of August. We spent the entire day on the deck, at night we roamed around the boat. It was very new and there was plenty to keep you busy. Even the cafeteria's food was good!

While in Corfu make sure you take Ionian Cruise's Paxos-Antipaxos-Parga day trip, as well as the one to Saranda, Albania. They were spectacular. They also have one to Kefalonia that I wish I had taken. The Ionians are not very well-connected by ferry, so if you want to see different islands without having to change base I think it's a good idea to be based in Corfu and do the excursions, that's what we did & it worked out very well.
