Are you following the thread entitled "Travelgirl's Trip of a Lifetime"? Her family spent some time in Greece this summer; I think you'd find that part of her report very informative (and the rest of it quite entertaining.)

I recommend Crete-Santorini-Naxos ending with 2+ days in Athens at the end. As I wrote earlier, back-country Crete & Naxos can supply the "real Greece" you yourself expressed a craving for, whilst towns/beaches will appease your teens. Save Sifnos for next time (& it won't have teen life).
A Boston flight w/change in Italy or Hamburg (avoid Paris transfer) can get you into Athens noon to 2:30 for a late- afternoon Crete flight to Chania.

gwelsh,
I don't know if Alitalia will still be in business after January (!!), but there is a nonstop from Boston-Milan, and Aegean or Alitalia fly from Milan-Athens. When booking, try to add any additional flights onto your orignal ticket. Most airlines have partner programs that enable you to tack on the additional European flights for a very reduced rate. Good luck!
