greek islands
If you had approx 6 nights, and have never been to Greece before, which island would you pick? Any resorts that you can recommend?
We would want a nice resort with beach/pool and some nice towns to visit. Air conditioning is a must. Our age range would be from 14 to 75 year olds and this would be during next summer. We would be Americans traveling from Austria.
Thanks.

Here's an off-beat answer: try doing a little research on Corfu. I have been there for a few days each of the last three summers. Needless to say, I love it.
Here's why:
It isn't quite as trendy as the other islands and therefore it seems to be a better bargain and it has never seemed overwhelmed with tourists.
It is a large island and with a rental car, there are many places to explore and visit.
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Pelekes Beach on the west side of the island. The beach that it is located on is beautiful and while the hotel is not seriously fancy, it was more than adequate and the price for a double room was about $65 per night, including breakfast and supper.
If you would like to see a few photos of Corfu and of the hotel, try my web site:

Incidentally, I'm not sure that I would want to spend 6 nights on any one island. Perhaps you could try two islands.
Finally, Corfu caters to British and German tourists and you may find that there are pretty good connections from Austria, too. Though connections between Corfu and other islands (Mykonnos, Santorini, etc.) are probably sparse.
Good luck!

Thanks Deb. I like your pictures. I also like your pics of Austria since that is on our itinerery as well!
Since I am new to the Greek Islands idea, I have not heard of Corfu. I will check it out.
My husband is wary of our original plan to go to Barcelona. We have friends that just returned and their family was pickpocketed twice and one of the men was assualted going to get coffee in the morning. So, he says who wants to vacation in a place where you constantly have to look over your shoulder.
He has heard many nice things about the greek islands and wants to go there now. So, I am back to researching ideas and easiest methods of travel between Austria and Greece. We will be spending about 8 or 9 nights in Austria and then going to an island in Greece for about 6 nights.
I will check out Corfu. Thanks.

Have been researching and could really use some guidance to the Greek Islands.
We would like an island with nice beaches and cute towns to visit. We would like a resort atmosphere.
Thanks

Many of us recommend islands in the Cyclades, mainly because they are so easy to reach from Athens, and therefore good for independent travelers.
Two bits of info that would help answer your query are: what time of the summer you will be in Greece; and, your budget for hotel rooms.
I'm not sure what you mean by resort - if you mean an enclosed hotel complex with private beach, restaurants, club, etc, there aren't many around. Rather than that you are more likely to find islands with small villages and towns developed from fishing ports into tourism. Hotels, rooms and restaurants are scattered around town, and beaches a short walk away, or outside the town, accessible by car or bus.
Hotels with pools tend to be at the expensive end of the spectrum. An example on Naxos, an island with excellent beaches, is http://tinyurl.com/ynq4x4.
