Greek Island Transportation

I have been lurking around these boards gathering valuable information - now for some questions.

What I have not been able to find is the price, duration and cost of the Fast Ferry from Pireaus to Mykonos. I have been able to find ferry timetables and rates in between the islands - but not from Athens.

Also, we know we want to do the Athens - Santorini route by easyjet. So would it be smarter to do it on the way back - therefore insuring we don't miss our flight out of Athens? Other option would be to fly TO Santorini, then visit Mykonos and ferry back to AThens. However, I am a bit worried about the promptness and reliability of the ferries when you are trying to catch a plane. I have heard they can get cancelled? Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

What time of year are you planning to be there?
Usually leaving a one-day buffer in Athens at the end of the trip will help make sure you get your flight home.
You don't mean you are using EasyJet (the company) to fly between islands, do you?

Sorry - got my airlines mixed up. We want to do Athens - Santorini by aegean airlines.

And we are going in the beginning of June this year.

The flight out of Athens is at 8:45 to Berline (and that is Easyjet - so we don't have to be there too early). So we can either fly into Athens (form santorini) and reach athens by 12:30. Or take the ferry over (which I still have no clue what their times are for June).

So hope that clarifies my question a bit.

wish they had an edit function on this board:

8:45 PM flight to Berlin, Germany.

And the Santorini flight would get me there by 12:30 P.M. - so that would be plenty of time in case of delays.

However - I would like to take the flight into Santorini (so we can get there quickly, and enjoy our stay there). And am hoping that there is an early ferry from mykonos to athens - but once again - the big issue here is reliability of ferries over plane.

Although the chances of a ferry cancellation or delay are not great, putting your ability to catch a same-day connecting flight out of Athens in the hands of the Greek Gods is definitely tempting the Fates. Either book a flight or give yourself a cushion of at least a day to make your way back to the mainland. If you do book a flight be sure to reconfirm a couple of days ahead (and again the morning of your departure) so you know for sure it's not been cancelled or delayed.

The Ferries from Mykonos to Athens I've found on the internet actually arrive in Rafina, not Piraeus. The Seajet takes about 2 hours and then you'll have to take a bus or taxi into Athens from there. Although I've never taken this route, my guess is that when you buy a ticket you will have the option to pay for the ride into town on a shuttle bus. It might even be automatically included in the price of your ticket. The earliest Seajet leaves at 11:50 a.m.

hawaiihoneymoon: check out www.greektravel.com I found this site to be extremely helpful when I planned a trip to Greece (Athens to Crete to Santorini to Athens).

Brotherleelove:
So true about about tempting fates. It's always a great idea to build in a lot of cushion, especially late in the season.

On our recent trip, it did provide a couple of extra days in a beautiful place and a thrilling Piraeus-airport cab ride that neither Disney nor Six Flags will never be able to duplicate.
