oops -- I thought you said Greece, not Greek islands.
Okay... I LOVE "Freedom or Death" by Nikos Kazantzakis.
If you can get it "Farewell Anatolia" by Dido Sotiriou is my favorite book -- not about the islands but it's about Greek stuff
Agree with the Durrell, My Family and Other Animals recommendation, esp. if you go to Corfu but even if you don't.
have fun

ANYTHING by Katzantzakis is good; and of course, there's Zorba the Greek.
Guide books- we use Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Blue Guides. But if you're hopping from archipelago to archipelago you need to watch you've got the right book. None of ours cover everywhere.

Hi
I really love my copy of "Independent Travellers Greek Island Hopping" by Frewin Poffley. In my humble opinion it is the most informative and entertaining book on the subject. I bought mine on Amazon. Here's the link - http://tinyurl.com/jvywn. For pure aesthetics the Eyewitness series is fab and I regularly thumb a copy of the Greek Island one much to the annoyance of the bookshop owner.
Cheers
