Greece: Paros vs. Naplion

Ok... still trying to book the end of my honeymoon (Aug 22-25) in Greece. We're hitting Crete and then Santorini... were going to go to Paros for the last four days, because we're looking for some nice beach days...but nothing I'm seeing is impressing me.

So my question for all of you experienced Greek travelers... Do I go to Paros or do I head back to "the mainland" for the last four days and rent a car and drive to Napflion...

Any help would be most appreciated.

thanks
jenny

I can't speak about Paros because we've never been there, but we recently returned from our trip to Greece and we spent a wonderful 3 nights in Nafplio.

We rented a car for 30 Euros a day and the drive took about 2 and 1/2 hours with a stop for a snack and a stop to check out the Corinth Canal.

We stayed at Pension Amfitriti in the Old Town which we highly recommend!
We felt 3 nights was perfect for us. Could've probably done 2 but it made for a nice leisurely time.
We took a day trip out to Mycenae and Epidavros (came back into town for lunch).

Nafplio is a great picturesque town. The Old Town and the Palamidi fortress warrant at least a day (maybe a day and a half).

Good luck and happy travels:)

I'd vote for Nafplion! It's probably my favorite single town in Greece.

A Fodor's search will turn up many threads on Nafplion, but take note of the many spellings:
Nafplio/Nafplion
Naplio/Naplion
Napflion, Nauflio, etc

And definitely make a point to stay in the old Venetian part of town, not the modern town.

I love both Paros and Napflion but they are totally different. nafplion is not a beach town, rather a small( 10,00 pop) city with a beautiful setting, toney shops, lovely countryside filled with antiquities surrounding it. Paros will give you an island experience, laid back, beaches, sitting by the water in simple tavernas, small mountain villages.. can't go wrong. Can't wait to visit both again.

Since you seem to have misgivings about Paros, then give it a miss. You say "...we're looking for some nice beach days", so Nafplion doesn't seem to be the logical choice either, but there are other places in the Peloponnese that have good beaches, I understand.

Since you will already be in Santorini, then either Naxos or Mykonos will give you a combination of great beaches and hotels. Or go the other way, stopping at Sifnos on the way back to the mainland.
