Hi, in Athens visit the Plaka (old city), Mt.Likavitos (go with cablecar)and the Acropolis if you fancy Acrheology. Mykonos is crowdwd and expensive, Paros is nice (visit Naoussa and Lefkes) and in Santorini visit Oia and Imerovigli. Have fun.

All the sights in Athens are free on Sunday. Don't go on Sunday!!!!

Be very careful in Greece. It has the highest crime rate in Europe and tourists are usually the easiest targets. Especially watch out for drugs in your drinks. Only buy bottled water or beer that you open yourself, otherwise you might get an unpleasant surprise, i.e. waking up with your lungs full of fluid, missing valuables, and no memory of what happened. It can happen. I should know -- it happened to me on Mykonos.

I'm going to Greece for the first time, too, but I only have two weeks. :( Since I'll be going in July, I'm hoping to avoid the major tourist traps but still visit the must-see spots. I'm planning to spend some time on Crete at a wine festival in Rethymno, and also hiking through the Samaria Gorge, but other than that I have no firm plans. Any suggestions for great off-the-beaten-path spots?

I'm really sorry on what "sniffus" is writing about Greece! This could be in any place. I hope, my friend "sniffus", you have already visited other places in the world too....
You never told us. Where are you from? Then, I'll be able to say more about your country... |
We were in Santorini for one day and about 3 days in Athens. I wish I could have reversed the amount of time spent in each. Santorini is absolutely beautiful. One of the few places on our month long trip throughout Europe that I felt safe in. Athens is a bit scarry in my opinion, especially if you go off main tourist areas. The sites we saw, Akropolis, Ancient Agora and the Plaka area were great though. I would not recommend going out at night in Athens unless you are with a group of people or in a very touristy area. I must say that anyone who drinks anything that is not in a bottle in a foreign country is asking for trouble. Good Luck.

I was in Greece in June '97 and felt very safe. I was a woman traveling alone. Use normal precautions and be aware of your surroundings. Everywhere I went Athens, Mycenea, Santorini and Crete the Greek people were incredably friendly and helpful. Don't miss the the Acropolis in Athens it's magnificient and the Plaka was very interesting. Spend some time in the Athens sidewalk cafes. You meet interesting people and can strike-up good conversations. It's really a good way to orient yourself to an unfamilar city and culture. But be careful if you are carrying a guide book. It makes you easy prey. Cover it with plain paper before you leave home. In Santorini don't miss Ancient Thera. In Fira they have a fantasic restaurant Archepaligos. It's right on the Chaldera with excellent views but get there by 7:30 pm for a seat with a view. They make an excellent special receipe spaghetti sauce. Don't get too stressed when the planes and ferries are late as they usually are just relax and enjoy the easy Greek way. Have Fun!
