Greece beach weather
 

We are visiting Greece June 5th-20th this year. I have been reading posts saying that June is the beginning of the hot weather in Greece and the islands. My question is about beaches and swimming. Is it still too cold to swim during this time?Will there be people on the beaches? We are starting at Mykonos then Naxos, Santorini and finally Crete. I am guessing that in Crete the weather will be wamer (as we advance into June) so we saved this as a last destination. Any comments about the weather will be appreciated.

No, it's not too cold to swim. I swim in the sea at Santorini in May. When the wind is blowing it cools the top layer of the water off, but other than that it's very comfortable. There will be other people on the beaches. Tourist season begins in May and by mid-June it can get pretty busy on the more popular islands.

If you're concerned about cold weather ruining your vacation, don't. But if you want to try to insure that you find as much warm water as possible, start in Crete and work your way north, just the opposite of your plan, since it'll be warmer earlier in the south.

Thanks so much for the reply! I feel so much better knowing that we will be able to sit on the beach and relax(that is the whole point of the vacation!). I appreciate the input.

Skittles, I played around a little on Google and found this website about climate in Crete: http://www.sfakia-crete.com/sfakia-c...e-climate.html. It probably tells more than you want to know, but around the middle of the page has a chart showing air and sea temperatures.

It is true that temperatures are a little warmer in Crete than further north in the Cyclades, but not enough to be overly concerned. You will enjoy the weather and the water wherever you are in that part of the Aegean.

thanks for all of that information. sounds like we would be better off going some other time? i wouldnt want to miss anything...i did put up another post asking for other suggestions for a destination. so those are welcome too.

I went during your same time period several years ago to Greece for my honeymoon. We found that you needed a light jacket at nighttime, but during the day it was very pleasant. We did find the water to be extremely cold (but we are use to the Gulf of Mexico). We didn't see too many people in the water (but we did go in), but there were lots of people on the beaches.

The sea may be a little fresh at the beginning but not dreadfully cold. June is lovely in Greece. There will certainly be people on the beaches and everything will be open but not too crowded.

We've been to Greece many times for the last 2 weeks in June and had beautiful hot and sunny weather - generally around 28 - 30C but sometimes even reaching 40C. The sea is generally warmer later in the season than earlier but by June it is warming up and should be very pleasant. The only place in Greece we've ever had a cloudy spell at that time (and that was only a few days) was in Corfu. There will be sufficient people around to ensure everything is open but it won't be anywhere near as crowded as July and August. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.
