I don’t believe there is much truth in the thought that Greeks are more welcoming at the start of the season than at the end. I’ve been to the Greek Islands many times at both ends of the season, and have never noticed a difference in how guests are treated. What is true is that in the middle of the season when they are busy they don’t have much time to stop and talk. Many summer workers on the islands, especially the touristy ones, are from other Balkan countries and not locals.

The only place we encountered grouchy staff( hotel, rental car office, taxi) in late fall was on Santorini. Most were not Greek rather Eastern European. We were told it was an end of season problem and that the service industry workers were exhausted. We didn’t like Santorini anyway but loved the rest of Greece. We only returned there to see Akrotiri when it reopened with a restored roof after the tragic accident/roof collapse. |
You risk a different problem start of the season. Will everything be fully operational? Fully staffed?
Whenever you decide to go find reviews for the same time of year. |
I usually go to Antiparos, where most of the workers are local and always friendly. The end of the season is also harvest time, and some of the regular visitors with friends on the island are invited out to the farms to help with fruit picking. Maybe the difference is that on islands less touristy than Santorini most of the businesses are staffed by family members, who are not just seasonal employees, and have a stake in its reputation.
