Great villa location for Tuscany hill town touring?
Hello - 2 couples in their early 50's will be going to Tuscany for 2-3 weeks in October....either 2006 or 2007 depending on work schedules...we're looking for a good location to base ourselves. we would like to rent a villa with a cook; be close to a charming village with restaurant options, able to tour wineries, relax, read, etc. What town would you recommend? we're not especially crazy about a large or touristy type place. Thanks!

Yes, be sure to spend time at slowtrav.com and look at rental reviews. I prefer the area south of Siena near Pienza and Montalcino.

Our family is staying for a couple of days outside Montalcino this summer so I'll be able to do some scout work then as well. thx

I agree with Bobthenavigator - our favorite area is near Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino...you can day trip to Siena, Cortona, Orvieto from that area easily as well. We (2 couples, age 50) are headed there in 3 weeks for our third time). You'll have a wonderful time exploring that area!

We liked staying in Cortona and another trip, Castellina in Chianti. We were able to esily do day trips from both.
