Great place(s) to stay in heel, toe region?( Patrick?)
Late in October are planning to spend about a week driving in this region. Hoping to find some
places with wonderful views, unusual places.
Someone (Patrick?) posted about a place he'd stayed, really interesting, with an unbelievable view. Of course I can't find it now, can anybody help me out?
Thanks for any and all help,
Newt

Well, I loved that whole area, staying at Hotel Sassi in Matera (although another post this past week mentioned another place that sounded great too). Also loved staying in Lecce for a few days and using it as a base for the "heel".
But what you're talking about is my magical place in Polignano. See the following website for the hotel/restaurant. When you see the interior of a room that is all brick vaulted -- that was our room with the tiny balcony over the crashing waves below.

Newt,
The other cave hotel Patrick was referring to in Matera is the Locanda di San Martino. It is located in the Sassi Barisano of Matera. (The hill town where the Passion of the Christ was filmed.) Web site:

Another beautiful, and very unusal place to stay in the heel is in a restored Trulli (round house made of rocks and shaped like a beehive)---- We loved the Acqua Rossa. It is located 2 miles off the main highway between Cisternino and Ostuni. Ostuni is a lovely "white" hill village, about 12 miles southeast of Alberobello, which is a "touristy" town filled with trullis!!
The town on the coast that Patrick recommended (Polignano) is also in the vicinty, and a very special spot.
If you type "trullo" in the search box, you will pull up a recent thread with more info on Matera, Alberobello, and several links that maybe be helpful to you.
If you plan on visiting Lecce, the Patria Palace is a sumptuous lodging choice in the heart of the medevial center.
I don't know if you plan on heading out to the Gargano Peninsula, but that area offers dramatic cliff views of the sea and some charming seaside and inland hill village options.
