By the way, if you want to do some shopping for china, glass or cookware, a Brussels institution is La Vaisselle au Kilo, tucked in a tiny alley off the Sablon (near the Jolly Hotel).

You can find the same china, etc., that they use in many Brussels cafes. And cookware for some classic Belgian dishes dishes like stoemp. Excellent prices and some of their china really is sold by weight. We bought our everyday china at a shop in Germany in 2002; they stopped carrying it before we completed the set. About six months ago, I discovered La Vaisselle now has it--I bought several dinner plates and some bowls for just 20 euro.
Good place for cooking enthusiasts to pick up souvenirs (another good place to find cookware is the basement of the Inno store on the rue Neuve but most of that is higher end).

And finally, from my list above, the number one place I'd recommend for a splurge or celebration dinner is Le Chalet de la Foret. Fabulous food, a beautiful setting, and not as stuffy/corporate as Comme Chez Soi. Can be pretty expensive (think around 150-200 euro for a multi-course dinner with one of their mid priced wines or more if you really want to splash out) but it's a real treat. And definitely WAY off the usual tourist trail, even though it's quite easy to reach by a short taxi ride. If you go in warmer months, you can dine on their lovely garden terrace. It's Belgium at its best--a perfect blend of French cuisine and Flemish design.

I just returned from a trip to Brussels and Paris (trip report will soon be posted) and the best meal that I had in Brussels was at Lo Scoglio (30, Quai aux briques) in the Fish Market area. It's Italian and the food was absolutely delicious. The portions were huge, so only order the fixed price menu (23.50 euro) if you are hungry. The first course was pasta with/ asparagus, shrimp and salmon. The second course was rabbit with green beans and potatoes (the best potatoes I have ever had) and the for dessert I had the sorbet since I was full and the other options were chocolate mousse and tiramisu.
