great hotel and food in Lyon

We are spending 10 days in Fran We would like to see Lyon and want to take a 2 day tripBest 4-5 star hotel or great restaurants. Any suggestions

Plenty of suggestions for you wordsmith.

As you're only in Lyon for two days, I'd suggest a central hotel so you can walk everywhere. My favourite is The Cour des Loges;

http://www.courdesloges.com/#!hotel-lyon/sejour-lyon

but if you'd prefer somewhere with a view, the Villa Florentine isn't too shabby;

Food-wise, you really are spoilt for choice, so here's a few top-end ones for you;

Enjoy!

I loved Cour des Loges. It's a great recommendation. And I don't remember eating a bad meal ever in Lyon.

annhig Dec 8th, 2016 06:41 AM

we called in at Lyon on the Rhone cruise we did in May but came away very frustrated as the itinerary didn't leave time for us to have a meal there, let alone stay over night.

It's definitely on my list for a return visit, so thanks for the hotel and restaurant tips.

Any recommendations for non-top end places? the bouchons for example?

When I go to Lyon, I stay at La Résidence. I have no idea how many stars it has and don't care. I just like that it's got BIG rooms and is on the main pedestrian street, so it's quiet but just a stonés throw from the Place Bellcoeur. Have eaten all over Lyon and never had a bad meal.

Here's another recommendation for La Residence.

Our very best, by far, meal in Lyon was l'Etage

http://www.letage-restaurant.com/

one of our finest dining experiences, anywhere, ever. I wish we had been able to return for another meal.

And, we really enjoyed l'Espace Brasserie. If you enjoy foie gras, highly recommend "des ravioles du Royans dans un velouté aux poireaux, une escalope de foie gras juste poêlée". Incredible and only 16,00 € (main course).

thanks St C & djkbooks.

those are all rather more in my price-range!

djkbooks Dec 8th, 2016 08:21 PM

Usually, we choose restaurants "affordable" for us, so we can order with abandon and not worry about prices for choosing. But, sometimes, it truly is well worth it to spend a bit more for a far more extraordinary experience.

In all our years of travel, so many places with raves and stars have been disappointing, and, more often, when you stick to "moderate", well, you get what you may for - neither objectionable nor particularly satisfying.

Note that there is usually a generous discount at l'Espace Brasserie when you book with

https://www.thefork.com/restaurant/e...brasserie/6280

I inadvertently overlooked the ahead of our lunch here, because we happened upon it for lunch ahead of catching our return train and I just didn't think to check.

annhig Dec 8th, 2016 10:20 PM

I agree djk that an occasional splurge can be a great experience but I've also had those in more prosaic places, and sometimes when we've splurged, we've been disappointed though our best meal ever was at le cinq - which I will never forget.

Good tip about checking The Fork - I sometimes look at it but don't find myself using it very often.

Jay_G Dec 9th, 2016 06:19 AM

Whilst not wanting to question (too much) how good some of the restaurants that have been suggested are, I wouldn't eat at anywhere (especially in Lyon) that offers a discount due to booking through a particular site.

I'm always a little wary of restaurants that need to offer discounts.

The quality of restaurants in Lyon is so high that you could probably eat more cheaply and possibly better at another restaurant, whilst paying full price.

Also, despite my wife being Lyonnaise and her family hailing from there for generations, I've never heard of 'Etage or L'espace brasserie (for whatever that's worth) and we eat out a lot.

Anyhoo, to answer your question annhig, regarding bouchons; here are are few that are good, and which I'm trying to fit in when back in Lyon in two weeks' time;

Current favourite; http://www.danieletdenise.fr/en/
Old favourite; http://restaurant-cafedesfederations-lyon.com
Surprisingly good, despite being in the middle of St. Jean; http://www.lyonresto.com/restaurant-...-Lyon-989.html
and another one for good luck; https://restaurant.michelin.fr/5u94kuk/le-musee-lyon-02

Hope this helps.

annhig Dec 9th, 2016 07:07 AM

thanks Jay - I'll have a look at those too. I did wonder about the ones in the main pedestrian centre as IME the large number of tourists would be likely to drive quality down, but I know that's not always the case.

As for using The Fork, I have found that some local restaurants I think highly of are part of this scheme so I don't see that necessarily as a reason to rule places out.

Jay_G Dec 9th, 2016 08:05 AM

No problem annhig.

Thanks for the correction regarding The Fork. Being honest, I'd never heard of that site before, but if it's getting you a saving at somewhere you like to go, so much the better.

That said, I've had a quick scan through the listings for Lyon and I think my point (at least as regards Lyon) still stands.

All the restaurants listed are hovering around the 9 out of 10 mark - The Auberge de L'ile which currently has one Michelin star, is rated lower than the Campanile hotel restaurant in Part Dieu. Which surely can't be right.

If you do make it back to Lyon, I'd suggest picking up a copy of Le Petit Paumé as they're a good yardstick of what's good and what's not. Failing that, ask literally anyone you bump into if they can recommend somewhere and they'll see you right.

annhig Dec 9th, 2016 08:32 AM

Great tips, Jay, thanks - and enjoy your next visit to Lyon. I don't know why but in our many trips to France it has never been on our radar and it's only because the cruise I was on started there that I got to go there in May. I definitely want to go back before too long.

MaineGG Dec 9th, 2016 08:48 AM

It's been a few years ago, but we enjoyed dinner at a little bouchon we happened upon - Le François Villon. It still has generally good ratings on Trip Advisor and is listed on the Petit Paumé site recommended by JayG.

http://www.lefrancoisvillon.fr/#!/page_home

We too liked La Résidence a lot. It's a 3-star, though, and you had mentioned wanting a 4 or 5-star.

Kathie Dec 9th, 2016 11:12 AM

Jay we used the French site, La Forchette while in Paris, and found many places offered nice discounts.

djkbooks Dec 9th, 2016 12:03 PM

<<I'm always a little wary of restaurants that need to offer discounts>>

I used to believe likewise and don't bother with coupons, Groupon, etc., for the reasons you mentioned.

When I first discovered The Fork, I found it most useful for restaurants in proximity and the convenience of making (and, if you have to, cancel) a reservation. There are plenty of fine restaurants on The Fork in Paris with discounts, which, for me, are just an added bonus, particularly for places we've dined many times and have become our favorites. And, for example, you can book Bustronome on The Fork with a considerable discount and no prepay (as opposed to booking directly on the website).

Jay_G Dec 12th, 2016 02:49 AM

Following all this feedback, I'll reserve judgement on The Fork / La Fourchette (is there a German version called Die Gabel?), but will certainly take the ratings with a pinch (or two) of salt.

annhig - no problem and thanks. I hope you make it there soon, but don't tell too many people about it.

It's already getting busier during the summer months thanks to a huge increase in the number of visitors, when not that long ago the city almost seemed to shut down. I've found myself regularly having to wait for a table en terrasse, which honestly, just won't do...

quelle horror, Jay. it was pretty busy that Monday morning in May when we were there with the boat but I suppose that was only to be expected. The time to worry is when it's busy in the middle of February!

tdk320n Apr 6th, 2017 09:43 AM

Thanks to all for the many good recommendations.
Will definitely try some of them for my trip this May
