Great Dessert in Paris
Do any of you have any 'not to be missed' desserts in Paris?
My wife and I have some pretty good sweet toothes and I wanted some ideas of places to try. |
One of the best sweets I have had in Paris (or anywhere else for that matter) was at Mariage Freres.
Strawberry Creme Brulee I still have dreams about it! |
Duggan,
So many trips to Paris have just taught me one thing, the place you least expect to find an outstanding dessert, will knock your socks off! Speaking as one with a major Sweet Tooth, I can only say that most of the places there serve Faaab chocolate mousse kind of desserts, tarte tatin, creme brulee..just a crepe from a man on the street is wonderful! Here is a small list of places that I love to eat in, therefore they also have lovely desserts. Helene Darozze, I had chocolate extravaganza, husband had one of those sorbet and cookie things with fresh fruit Le Violin D'Ingres, chocolate tart with apple and chocolate sauce D'Chex Eux, they bring a trolley, dozens of desserts, puts someone like me into a tizzy trying to decide-so I just tasted everything. The chocolate mousse was incredible:) Angelinas Tea Salon, chocolate, and more chocolate, don't miss it. There is a bakery on the corner of rue Seine and rue de Buci-we used to stop by in the afternoons and just pick up a sweet or two to take back to the room for a snack:) Hope this helps~ |
One of the most genuinely enjoyable desserts I've ever had, was years ago when I was in Paris, in January, and it was FREEZING COLD....standing next to a crepe vendor's cart, enjoying a warm, freshly made crepe spread with chocolate and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Ohhhhh mannnnn, was it good.
|
the chocolat noire ice cream from Berthillion on Ile St Louis is to die for. And I thought chocolate gelato from Giolitti's (Rome) was good...this stuff was unbelievable.
|
Just walk and look for "Patisserie Boulangerie" ...enter ... and you will be tempted by all you'll see! My preference go to "Pain aux raisins" and each time I arrive in Paris, after deposing my luggage in hotel is to search for a "pain aux raisins"!

Wonderful desserts in Paris are too numerous to list but, having just returned from Paris, several remain in my mind and my dreams:
Chocolate cake with a molten center on a bed of coffee mousse at Bastide d'Odeon; chocolate noir ice cream and tangerine sorbet at Berthillion; a rhubarb tart with lemon thyme ice cream at L'Epi Dupin and so much more. |
I second the hot chocolate (Chocolat africain) at Angelina's -- sinfully rich, so thick that most people eat it with a spoon, served with a bowl of freshly whipped cream on the side.
My own personal favorite, a serendipitous discovery on a day they were out of my first choice, is also from Angelina's. The specialty of the house is the Mont Blanc, a snowball of frozen cream Chantilly covered in creme de marron (chestnut puree), sitting on a thin macaroon. This is what dessert was meant to be. You can find amazing desserts in most of the patisseries in Paris. Just looking in some of the windows is like a visit to a museum. Also not to be missed is the ice cream from Berthillon (and I'm not a huge ice cream lover) and the macaroons, which are more like the Italian amaretti, but not so hard. The ones from Dalloyau are reknowned, but I've had excellent luck in patisseries. In the realm of street food, a crepe from a vendor and, if you're there in winter, not really dessert, but roasted chestnuts sold on the street. Enough! I'm making myself hungry. Hope this helps. |
Any of the desserts at Laduree (75 avenue des Champs-Elysées):
http://www.laduree.fr/boutique_va.htm. Like Toupary mentioned, any of the patisseries have awesome desserts - I love the chocolate eclairs, pain au chocolat, basically anything chocolate! Enjoy! |
Marrons glacees, available in most candy stores, hard to find in the States. (I guess you can tell I like chestnuts.)
|
We had a fantastic Tarte Tartine at the Mariage Frere on the left bank!
|
oh those eclairs!
|
You know how they have these tours where people see Famous homes or Jack the Ripper tours, Ghosts, etc?
Well, I propose that we start DESSERT TOURS! :D We could arrange tours to Paris and other countries/cities and just do desserts! Just imagine ~sigh~ |
creme brulee -- they make it like nowhere else!
|
The best crepe I ever had in Paris was from one of the streetside vendors outside the La Samarataine department store. It was hot, brushed with butter and apricot jam and I ate it as a little flurry of ice/snow enveloped the sidewalk.....these are memories you can taste in your sleep!
|
You'll get diferent opinions from this house!
MDH says there is nothing to compare with the mango soup with coconut-banana emulsion at Bookinistres...I vote for vacherin ...meringue, ice cream, caramel sauce at Rotisserie d'un face. Ahhhh , but maroon glaces anywhere or Mont Blanc! or anything with chestnuts!I'm in heaven! |
Scarlett Sign me up for your Dessert Tour. Give me a good seat on the bus with the double wide seats!
My contribution is Gerard Mulot in the 6th (rue de Seine; Metro-Odeon). Wonderful little pastries-chocolate cakes, fruit tartlets etc. We bought one to take on the plane home-much better than the fare that the carrier was serving. |
LOL~AGM, that bus will HAVE to have double wide seats :)

Food and wine are the main reasons I find myself continually returning to Paris and France. I've made a science out of testing every Creme Brulee I can get my hands on. A special dessert here, they are on every menu in France and I never pass them up. Someone mentioned Laudree's but I'm surprised they didn't mention the macaroons. Not like the macaroons we know, these are the lightest merengue like cookie/candy you can imagine. They come in many flavors, but raspberry is my favorite. Their quality totally depends on where you get them and Laudree's is one of the best! Soemthing so light can not be fattening or bad for you!
