There is also a Peek and Cloppenburg in Vienna. They're not at all in the same category as C&A, they're much better than that. Esp. for men's clothes...the one in Vienna carries an excellent selection of Van Laack men's shirts (and they actually put them on sale at a decent discount, very rare for VL), so I try to pick up one or two for my husband every year.

My favorite discount clothing store is Vogele although I haven't shopped in one for a while...we haven't been to anyplace recently that has a Vogele store.

It is pretty cheap, but I don't consider it great. It is good when you need something cheap when traveling, as maybe the weather is different, you forgot something, etc. -- but you don't want to invest a lot.

It's not like Old Navy at all, to me -- Old Navy is very very youth-oriented, whereas C&A has a variety of depts geared to different age groups. It's not quite as bad as Wal-mart clothing IMO. I think it is a little classier than Old Navy, but that's not saying anything as Old Navy isn't classy at all.

But a little something to add:

There are 2 German companies by the Peek & Cloppenburg name. Both operate several stores. One is headquartered in Hamburg, one in Duesseldorf.
There have been several lawsuits over the brand name etc. between the companies. The Duesseldorf based chain operates in areas where the Hamburg based one is present under the Anson brand.

Seriously - the Duesseldorf based company. It is much bigger and has a presence in Southern and Western Germany as well as throughout a couple of European countries. The Hamburg chain is only located in Northern Germany including Muenster and in Dresden and Chemnitz.

Interestingly they even have the same brand label.

Having been to US Wal-Mart's and C&A in the recent days, I must say (as much as I dislike WM), that the clothes WM sells are superior in quality compared to the C&A stuff. Both get much of their merchandise from China and third world countries, in both cases qou have to cope with a guilty conscience, because you personally took advantage of poor work and living conditions in those places.

However nowadays there aren't many other options left.

I think the OP did not want to give the impression that a cheap clothing store like C&A fulfills all her (or his?) fashion needs for the rest of her/his life.

If you are travelling abroad and just spilled red wine over your (fashionable) good pants, or if you get out of the plane in Madrid and it's not 20C but 20F outside, you need clothes, and you need them quickly.

In cases like this, C&A comes in handy. As well as Wal-Mart.

Oh good God ! -C & A - why did someone have to remind me - in the UK this had to be the worst store ever to have shown its face of the high street - the 1980s at its worst.

Why save on clothes that fall apart after 3 months. Primark is an example - dirt cheap but everything I have bought has lasted 2 and a half days.

If anyone comes to the UK and wants travel designed clothes that last a decade try Rohan - their clothes are very lightweight perfect for travel and indestructible.

Who would want to wear anything for TEN YEARS? I think we can call fashion police now! Or maybe it became in and out three times during that time.

3 MONTHS is a pretty good lifespan for a piece of clothing. I think stores like Zara or H&M change (parts of) their collections every 2-3 WEEKS.

Anyone with a mental age over 5. Rohan's firmly aimed at grown-ups, and most of us are fit enough to fit into Rohans we bought a decade or more ago.

I'd be very much willing to invest in quality stuff, but if it's only more of the same chinese clothes at three times the price it doesn't make sense to me. $80 for a T-Shirt are a bargain when it lasts!

Rohan travel clothes are not supposed to be fashionable - fleeces that last ten years will do for me! No - I dont where fleeces in town - Gant, Armani or RL. I have a plain black wool Armani wintercoat looks £1,000,000 and is five years old. Classic cut and still fashionable.

Anyone paying good money for clothes that last three months needs their head seeing to! Mugs of the tramp shops that sell them.

No intention of going on the streets looking like a fashion victim tramp!

they are a niche operator and I don't think they offer international deliveries - you could ring them they are very friendly and helpful.

Their clothes are a godsend in today's travel environment - they take none of your baggage allowance as they pack down to nothing, weigh nothing yet are very warm. Keeps you on the good side of your wife - so she can use the rest of the allowance!

From the pictures, it's so difficult to find out, if it's not just the same stuff from a factory somewhere around Shenzhen, just sold at higher prices. (They do produce some good quality, but not everthing is good). I would very much prefer "Made in the U.K", if something like this is still available.

I'll check this out the next time I'm in the U.K., thanks again!
