great british pubs

I have recently seen and then bought an excellent book on 'Great British Pubs' by Adrian Tierney Jones. It is a CAMRA guide - Campaign for Real Ale. It is written under various sections including: the best City Pubs, the best riverside Pubs, the best seaside Pubs, the best food Pubs, the best countryside Pubs, the best heritage Pubs, the best B&B Pubs etc, it also includes a London Pub Walk and Edinburgh Pub Walk, It is beautifully presented, not at all like most guide books on Pubs.

The section that got me excited was the seaside Pubs which include: Anchor Inn, Seatown, Dorset - looks gorgeous; Lifeboat Ale and Cider House, Margate in Kent - looks solid and traditional; Lord Nelson in Southwold, Suffolk - looks quaint; Old Inn, Gairloch in Scotland - looks strong and imposing; Olde Ship Inn in Seahouses, Northumberland - located in a strange little place and well worth a visit; Seven Stars in Falmouth, Cornwall - a black and white Pub; Ship Inn at Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey - one of the ones I have actually seen and its very atmospheric; Tigh an Truish in Oban, Argyll and Bute - looks formidable; Turf in Exminster, Devon - like all the pubs here has a great selection of local beers; Victoria Hotel in Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire - one of the most exciting resorts with its quaint windy cobbled streets.

How I love winter for a romantic get away to one of these wonderful Pubs by the sea, roaring fires, hot punch and a hot pie and mash (and fewer people around) - bliss.

If you like seaside pubs, I can highly, highly recommend Y Llong (The Ship) in Tresaith, Ceredigion, West Wales. It's a Brains pub, and I don't know that it qualifies for CAMRA notice. But it's lovely and cozy inside, good food, with a fantastic terrace overlooking the beach at Tresaith. Can't be beat.
