As far as "City of Falling Angels" the less said about that book, the better-it's an insult to the city, and so utterly badly written, that it's really a joke. If you read that book, you actually get the impression that the Save Venice Foundation and the ex-pats play an important role in the life of the city. I can assure you, NOTHING could be further from the truth-and of course the British book reviews, always more honest, ripped it to shreds. I'm glad Massimo Cacciari, the mayor of Venice, sent an email about the book to the NYTimes: "It's not my habit to comment on things that don't interest me and that I don't like." he said. I understand Berendt was under a deadline, and had to turn something in at the last minute-it showed! (and by the way, of the ex-pats I know in Venice, NO ONE thought Berendt spoke Italian the way HE indicated he did, i.e., fluently-he speaks a bit, but isn't fluent at all.

History buffs and anyone after a good read should check out Thomas Madden's Venice; A New History.
