Great affordable hotel in Budapest?

Looking for a "find" in Budapest for October, any ideas? Thanks so much.

You're going to love Budapest! One of my favorite cities. My husband and I were there last fall , weather was great. Sorry, can't help you with a "find" but sure some of the fodorites will know of a place.

Hi,

I stayed in Budapest a for a few months (in an apartment), but my aunt requested I check out hotel fares for her, so here goes...

If you're willing to hostel it, it can be as cheap as $8 per person, and if you're two people it's probably double to triple for a double room with shared bathroom. Ironically, for a city that's so affordable on the American dollar, hotels are outrageously priced. The cheapest I found was $50 or 60 per night in the Jewish part of the city, I think it's called King David. And of course there are all the hotels by the Duna River and Castle. Ler's just say I fainted when I heard the prices (comparable to what would would cost in NY). If you want view, but don't mind shelling out the cash, then by all means stay at the Intercontinental or one of the others off the main tourist square. If you don't mind being a little away from the tourist area (but still central to everything, try looking in the District 7 - Jewish District). It's not as pretty, but it's central to everything (Budapest is a pretty spread out city, unlike Prague). There's a metro station a few minutes walk away and 4 tram lines nearby, as well as buses. And two of the tram lines are less than a 5 minute ride away from the river, where you will undoubtely end up often.

If you want, email me @ [email protected]. As I said I lived there a few months and know the layout of the city pretty well.

My husband and I stayed at the Molnar Panzio (Panzio is Pension in Hungarian) well under $100.00 the best meals of the entire trip, lovely house, gym, view of the city, and friendly English speaking staff. I highly recommend it. I found one link below, but I am sure if you do a google search on Molnar Panzio, you will get a bunch more. We really enjoyed this hotel.

http://www.czechers.co.uk/budapest/a...ges/molnar.htm

Thanks for the quick advice.
I am going to delve into this tomorrow.
Is Molnar Panzio an easy taxi ride into "town"? We will need transfers from airport to hotel and then to catch a river cruise later in the week.

I will be in Budapest in March and am staying at the Kalmar Bed and Breakfast across the street from the Gellert Hotel on the Buda side of the Danube. The cost during March is $32 USD inclusive of taxes and breakfast. The Kalmar is a villa that was built in 1902. The reviews I have read are excellent.

I booked this through www.budapesthotels.com and have found Anita Kalan, the account executive, to be most delightful, answering the most inane questions that have nothing to do with the bed and breakfast.

Last spring we stayed at a hotel that had the perfect location. It was right on castle hill. The only other hotel up there was (I believe) the Hilton at about 3 times the rate. I'm nearly 100% certain that the name of the hotel was the Kulturinov. It was in a large building that houses the Hungarian National Cultural Center. It was fun getting up in the morning and hearing the musical practices taking place in the building. The rooms were clean but spartan with adequate private baths. Price, maybe about $60-$70. Breakfast was just fine. The location was top of the line.

Felina: We loved the little Inn in the Watertown area called Astra Vendeghaz. Built around a courtyard, it is in a refurbished 300 year old building. The rooms are large and beautifully decorated in traditional Hungarian style. The staff is very friendly and secured street parking (cameras) is available. It is about a ten minute walk to the Charle's Bridge (your on the Buda side) and straight up the hill to the Castle Hill Area. We walked everywhere from here. There are some good restaurants in the Watertown Area. Make your reservations early, we did, and ask for the highside (up the hill), second level room on the entry side of the INN. This is the premier room. The furnishings, draperies and linens were beautiful. About $120 per night in high season as I recall.

I knew "my" Fodorites would come though with good ideas! Thanks so much.

Leslie Feb 7th, 2002 10:15 AM

Joe, the Charles Bridge is in Prague, not Budapest. The Vlatva River is in Prague, the Danube River is in Budapest.

Joe Feb 7th, 2002 11:31 AM

Leslie: Of course you are correct. I meant the Szechenyl Lanchid or Chain Bridge. Having been to Prague and Budapest, I mixed the two as I attempted to engage my brain. My apologies to Felina if I caused her confusion. No mistakes on Astra Vendeghaz, however.

Alice the Magyar Feb 8th, 2002 05:25 PM

Hi everyone, Joe, I too mix the two up so don't feel bad! And you know what? I have never been to Prague! I have been to Hungary many times. I use to use IBUSZ, they rent out rooms and flats which are MUCH more reasonable then hotels. They also have places were you can stay with families in homes or flats that are even way cheaper. Last year it was 4,000 foints per night, excharge rate was 280 forints per USA $ which was a little under $14.50 a night. And that was in June! If you do go with staying with a family, be warned! You may fall in love with them! and have to go back every year!! They will spoil you if let them!! I know this first hand. We go all over Hungary, I have learned so much from the family I stayed with. In fact I am part of their family now. Have fun! Alice

To Alice the Magyar,
I would like to write to you about home stays. I looked on the IBUSZ site and found only hotels. This is my correct EMail site if you would be so kind as to contact me. Thanks. Linda

Alice The Magyar Feb 17th, 2002 03:57 PM

Hi Linda I just saw this note from you. I am sorry didn't go back here for a while. If you e-mail me please put in a title, or I will just throw it away as I get so MUCH JUNK mail. Like from Linda@eurotrip. Would be fine even

Alice The Magyar Feb 17th, 2002 04:46 PM

Hi Joe, you are welcome, I am sorry I can't write Magyar, I read very little, and speak just enough to get by.
Szia, Alizka
