Which restaurants did you like best in Graz. Money no object.

Well, Sheila, I can tell you where we were disappointed in "special occasion" meal in Graz!

Probably because I'm a sucker for dining outside, and with "views", we chose the Landhausekeller on a trip in 2002. Beautiful setting, but food was just good rather than great.

What a great idea to visit Graz, capital of Styria.

Well, Krebsenkeller (Sackstrasse) is not that bad, and you also sit good outside at Alte Münze Sackstrasse/Schlossbergplatz, near the stair up to Schlossberg).

Graz is (until now) still to be discovered by tourism. There is a university there and there is a quite lively cultural scene. This said, just look for yourself, you might find a lot of great places to enjoy your stay.

In addition:

Styrians are proud of their forests but also of their agricultural products as wine, fruit, vegetables, salads, beef, pork and poultry. If you have the possibility, look for a peasant market, where these products are sold.

You will get these local products also served at Graz restaurants and inns. Look out for "Steirische Küche" - Styrian cuisine. But you are not restricted to this typical and excellent cuisine, there are restaurants and inns serving for every taste. You may find also balcanese grill specialities being served at a reasonable price.

Besides, as the Styrian are of rural descent - nevertheless, they have a lovely capital which I consider to be urban in a very humane way - they like their hearty food not to be served in small portions. Do I have to add, that I like this attitude?

As typical Styrian specialities you might find a kind of Styrian rosee wine called "Schilcher". Also, an oil made of pumpkin seed, used for salads , having a colour like motor oil but of an excellent taste comparable to nut, called "Kernöl". For a snack try a "Brettljausn", differnt kind of sausage and pig fat served with peasant´s bread, this goes well with Styrian wine or beer.

For beer try "Gösser" or "Reininghaus", outstandingd products of styrian agriculture and industry.

There are also coffee houses which reflect the past imperial tradition. Also, as everywhere in Austria, you may find excellent desserts and pastry.

If your meal was quite filling, you can get typical liquor made from Styrian fruit as "Obstler" a kind of apple jack, or "Williams" made from williams pears.

Conclusion: At Graz, you will get excellent food for a reasonable price. To go around and to look for some nice place is part of the fun. As inns and restaurants have to put their menue outside for the public, you can compare the offer and the prize in an easy way.
