Grand Princess westbound got off 7 25 any questions?

We got off the Grand Princess on 7 25 98 from Istanbul to Barcelona. They say everything will be fixed, carpet replacements, pipes changed, uneven floors, repainting and pool repairs by December. Even with those problems, it was a great cruise. All of the pools were open daily, they did thereairs at night. The amount of people and size are amazing yet no crowding, except for Bingo. They handled everything very well. Tours were good, some were very poor. I will be happy to answer any questions about activities or tours, including costs. My wife is coming off radiation treatments and having a difficult time walking and swallowing, the staff and crew bent over backwards to make it great. The chefs and the waiters always prepared her food blended. Ask for what ever you want if you don't like it tell them and they WILL get you something else. I wish we were still on board!

I'm confused....I thought the ship was new..why are they repairing, repainting and recarpeting? I will be on the 8/6 sailing? Are these repairs noticable?
Is the construction and repair work noisy? Are the cabins done? Have read some lenghtly reviews and haven't heard much mention of repairs being done. Hope it didn't make it any less grand for you! I am getting very excited about the trip! What percentage of men wore tuxes on formal nights? DId you stand out if you didn't don one? Is the Istanbul airport confusing. We are arriving at 3:00pm the afternoon we can embark (not staying in hotel before hand). Is the Princess transportation easy to spot in the airport? What tours were very poor? We are booked for many and will change based on recommendations! Did you or anyone you spoke with take the overnight tour to Rome? We are signed up for it and looking for feedback. Did you climb the Acropolis? Was it a hard climb? The tours in Kusadasi..are they easy walking or much climbing up inclines? Any responses are appreciated!

We are looking forward to our departure from Istanbul on Aug 6. What one or two things about the cruise do you wish you had known before you boarded? What things would you have done differently in hindsight? Particularly, what tours did you find very good or a complete waste of time and money? What ports would you recommend that we do our own thing with taxis and create our own tour? Are the tours easy to book at the last minute or do they fill up early? How early? What is the average age of the passengers? What is the mix of passenger nationalities? What can we expect from the weather? Are rain showers possible this time of year? Thanks for your advice.

Which tour did you take in Monte Carlo we can't decide what to do there. Also were the pools fresh or sea water. Thank you

Is there any name act entertainment aboard? I booked a mini-suite and was wondering if anyone had or saw one. Also, is the butler service good? What do they do for you, do they unpack your clothes, and seee that they are pressed. I'm getting the impression this is just someone else to tip. Also, how was your flight? Did you have to make several stops or was it a charter? I also understand that there is now a small charge per person to eat in the alternative dining rooms. Is this to cover a service charge for the waiter?

Okay, let's see if I can get all of your questions answered. I have all of the Princess Patters and menu's. So if you have more questions, feel free.
First, to dispel any downers the ship was great!
It was just rushed into service with sloppy workmanship. ALL of this is being repaired, the President of P&O (parent of Princess)came aboard in Naples I believe. Some crew members told me he likes to inspect at 4:30am.
Von, They are replacing some carpets that got wet due to leaking pipes, 50% of the pipes have been replaced. The paint was not done correctly and they start scraping and sanding every morning. Our table friends on the 12 deck were upset at the fumes. We did not have that experince on deck 10. Very little noise. In Venice we were parked up front near St Mark's it was the most celebated day of the year with boats all over the harbor and 45 mins of fireworks. When the boats were leaving outside our balcony they were noisy, but as sooon ast the sliding door was clsed we heard nothing. 60-70% of the men wore tux at the late seating, not as many at the earlier. You will not be out of place with a business suit. I rented a tux from the Princess referred Cruiseline formal wear two jacks and shirts for$100 delivered and picked up from my sateroom. And it fit great. Princess did not pick us up at the airport at 11:30pm, we were picked up by our hotel the Kempinski. But Princess people were there with signs just outside customs. It was not a hassle. Sorry I knew people that took the trip to Rome but did not talk to them on their return. In Athens my wife took the Leisurely Athens, and did not like it because of the guides attitude. I took the Classic Civilizations and it was outstanding!!!! We took the Tuscan Countryside in Livorno wish I hadn't it was not informative, if you have been on a wine tour in the states you would dislike this. We heard Pisa was a 1/2 hour look and not good with 10,000 other people trying to see too. We would have rather stayed in Livorno all day not just the morning. the shuttle from the ship was to the center of the city and it was a good town to roam. We didn't do the Acropolis but we heard that it was a climb and very hot! We drove right by it on my tour, thatwas fine for me. Kusadasi was very good with good tour guides, we took the St John's Basilica (some climbing) and Virgin Mary's Shrine. We waited in line a long time but in the shade for this about 20 mins. to me and especially my wife it was super. My wife walks with a cane after having radiation but she made this fine with some rests. Take a container if you want water from the wells there. You drive right by Ephesus on this tour you see a lot but not all, it is very large and the poeple coming back from this tour said it was much bigger than they had thought and it was tiring Kusadasi was the last great bargain, get liquor and wines after you past through the customs/police station and before the pier on the left. Good buys, check out all three vendors before buying, and look behind the counter.
Jim we liked all of the ports I think our favorite was the Sorrento and Amalfi Drive and Naples Panorama. It was all day but what views! When the bus let's you off at the wood store skip it and go toward the water cross one street and turn right into the first alley. There you will see Italy it was great. Go to the wood store on the way back, unless you need to GO bad then the unisex toilet is in the back of the wood store, boys left girls right. Most toilets you have to pay, ask your guide they should be paying. Book your tours as soon as you can. The nationalities were mixed 60% english speaking 20% spanish, 10% oriental the rest a mix. Everyone was happy and friendly a big family with the Grand in common. John in Monto Carlo we took the Senic French Riviera Drive it was very good we took it in the AM and went back to the ship for lunch and came back in the afternoon to gamble. Venice was the most expensive and the tour guides were the worst. Do this city on your own the water bus and taxi's will take you everywhere. 4500 to 6500 IL. Greg Bonham an Australian singing star; Red Buttons; Al Martino were the name stars on our cruise. Gamble in the casino on board the night going out of Venice they seemed to be set well. Especially after paying $6 for a coke at St. Marks Square. Dress properly to visit St Marks or you won't get in. I'll answer more tomorrow. Chow

To continue...Get an e-mail address from Yahoo before you go and bring your POP3 server info with you if you want to check e-mail back home. They have 6 computer set for e-mail, letters, printing etc. The butler was always in tails I don't know what he did except I saw him delivering Hors d'oeuvres every afternoon. The guide lines for the butler for tipping is $2/day that's less than the stateromm stewart. The balconies on deck 10 were the biggest other than the large suites. Two lounge chairs a table and two chairs were there with plenty of room. The age of the passengers was about 50% over 50, 30% over 30, and a bunch of kids on our cruise. But the kids had there areas and did not see them that much. Teen area is restricted to teens. Kids fun zone was set up for them to eat and have a great time. The pool at the rear of the ship was a very nice place to sit and relax. The reef pool had the retractable ceiling and they closed it during the Captains welcome party and they A/C it. They have been repair the "lap" pool evrynight, it was leaking into the princess theater at one time. I think that them may have fixed the problem.
If you drink wine bring as small corkscrew they never seemed to have one. My balcony neighbors were always borrowing my swiss army knive. Bring zip lock bags to but fruit in from the Horizon Court so you can take it on the tours, with the heat you will get dry. Melon helps. Bring detergent in a zip lock bag double bagged, if you expect to do wash. In 12 days you will need a least 2 bags, we used what we do at home to fill small zips, didn't have to measure.
Do not take the F tour on the last day in Barcelona to a small village, it was very poor. A total waste. I would have liked to spend more free time in Barcelona a very nice city. Your only bargains will come in Turkey, the rest will be expecting your dollars. Use an ATM the ships money changer was less than the normal exchange rate plus a $1.50 bank charge. Most people in the countries would take...but not happy to receive US dollars.
