Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc or Familia Hotel?
 

My friend and I will be in Paris for 4 days in Oct,2007. I e-mailed both hotels and got responses from them. Pricewise, they are comparable. I know Jeanne d'Arc is in the Marais and Familia is at the Latin Quarter. I checked both at Tripadvisor and have good reviews although Familia has better ones. Any personal experience with these hotels? Thanks for any advice.

My advice would be to choose the hotel in the area where you want to stay. It's more important to have easy access to the kinds of restaurants and shops and experiences that you are looking for. In truth, you'll be spending very little time in your room. I prefer the Marais as a place to stay, but that's my favorite area of Paris for restaurants. Others prefer the Latin Quarter.

I had to respond to this though you will LOL as my recommendation is 35 years out of date. When my sister and I were left money from my Grandfather in 1970, it was specifically given to be used to travel. So, at 21 and 16, we set out for Europe. The Hotel Familia in Paris was our first stop: I checked it out on Trip Advisor and their own website to ensure it was even remotely the same. I instantly recognized the gabled roofed bedrooms, though in those days, there were no private rooms; all shared bathrooms. Ask for a room with balcony: they are tiny but large enought to stand out on at sunset and toast with your first glass of vino. Enjoy!

We stayed at Hotel Jeanne d'Arc earlier this year and were thrilled with the location and our room. It was a good size, with small sitting area included. It was the room right across from the lobby. Noise wasn't a problem at all. This hotel always is fully booked so don't wait to reserve.

Hotel Jeanne d'Arc

We stayed in Jeanne d'Arc, too last April and loved the hotel. It is an excellent location and the staff are very nice. The bathroom was a good size and we had a triple room (two adults & child) Room was a bit worn but for the price and location it was just perfect. The Marais is a great area. We stayed on the left bank our first trip and didn't fall in love with Paris until we stayed in this area.

LJ, what a great story! I have 2 daughters, 20 and 16 and it made me happy to think of them embarking on such an adventure although in reality I would be a nervous wreck. You will have to tell the story of your trip someday.
