GRAND HOTEL CONVENTO DI AMALFI formerly known as Cappucini Convento supposedly opening in 2008

I am one among several over the last few years who has tried to determine the status of the old Cappucini Convento hotel in Amalfi, the site of several famous oil portraits of Amalfi's seascape. Here's a link to the thread where others were passing along comments and questions for background.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=34430617

After all my e-mails over the last year or two were ignored (or hit the spam filter), last week I faxed the Framon Group, the current owners, to ask if the hotel is going to open in 2008. They cannot tell me a month in which it will open, they merely say that it will. Seeing is believing, but, I hope it to be true it does open, and, for those who have a similar hope, I will, if and when I get a solid confirmation of an opening month, I will post that. The Framon Group has assured me they will send me information when they have that. We shall see if they do!

That is good news. So far I haven't been up to Cappucini and I have a print of one of the old paintings of the grounds. I, too, wonder if it is really going to happen in 2008.

Did you all know that this was open under the NH Hotels banner?

Thank you! I don't visit the forums as often as I'd like and only have this day seen your information. Very much appreciated, ekscrunchy!

Jula: The reviews for this latest incarnation (those that I've seen) are almost uniformly excellent.

Unfortunately, the prices put it in the top rank for Amalfi!

I would like to just have dinner or lunch there! After looking at the empty hotel from afar so many times I am so intrigued.

I know! I think I first heard about the hotel from your post years ago!

They say on their website that they have an arrangement with a private beach, but no mention that I saw of whether or not they offer transport to the beach.

I wish they had a price list on their site, rather those booking engines that make you select your dates before showing the prices. When I selected random dates, the prices seemed very high considering that they are not on the sea and have what looks like a tiny pool...

I remember going to Lunch there years ago before the renovations and changes began. It was my first trip on the Amalfi Coast. I felt like I was hallucinating (as I did every day that first time). What a beautiful location!!! I remember that I had Gamberi with fresh mint and lemon......

Ciao, Bella!

The hotel does seem to be rather spiffed up now..but that view looks (sorry for the cliche) heavenly. That is the beauty of traveling--how those memories linger on in such detail..I can just picture those gamberi!

Ha Ha ekscrunchy, I was just sitting here wondering if there is ANY hotel in that little area that ISN"T suspended between the sea and heaven! Back when I was there I remembered that it must have been a pretty nice place to be a Nun in the earlier years.....

Good luck with your upcoming trip. BTW, have you ever eaten at the Tenuta Seliano agriturismo in Paestum- just remembering the Baronessa Cecilia and her sons- what a Table!!!
I'm afraid they are now beyond my pocketbook though...
