4 day trip UK Essex area?
Hi guys,
me and my GF just got some realy cheap flight tickets to UK and we are planning short 4 day trip this january (yes, we are used to terrible weather ) and we are looking for a nice town to be accomodated in where we can spend most of the time exploring + maybe a daytrip to some interesting place in surroundings.
What town would you recomend (please not London) not too far from Stansted airport?? I´ve heard about Colchester, Suffolk, Cambridge...or what do you recommend? We would prefer to travel by train or bus, idea of driving on the left scares me ...
Thanks for any ideas

If you don't want to drive, Cambridge seems the best choice to me. It's not far from Stansted Airport, and it's easy to explore the historic colleges area on foot or by bicycle.
There is a mainline train to the cathedral city of Ely, and a local train and buses to Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. Newmarket has a new horse racing museum being inaugurated by the Queen today, and Bury St Edmunds has an ancient abbey and other historic buildings.

I would like to second the suggestion of Cambridge. I spent a week these in September and found lots to do! Visit the American cemetery there where American fliers and soldiers from World War II are buried. Duxford Air Museum is nearby. Besides British planes there is also a hangar devoted to American planes. There is lots to do in Cambridge itself.
Also recommend Ely as mentioned above. Norwich is within a train ride. Cathedral, Castle, medieval streets.
You will find more than enough to do! Enjoy!
