Granada apartment location and suggestions
 

Place to stay in Granada: WE are a family of 5 who would like to stay in a safe, pretty quiet apartment (or possibly hotel).

We are considering staying in an apartment off Cuesta del Chapiz near Ctra Abadia del Sacromonte. I have heard that Sacromonte can be quite dangerous. Do you know if this area is safe for a family?

I love the Albaicin and Sacromonte. There are apparently occasional muggings at night. This part of town definitely has a Gypsy vibe. I would look for an apt. on Carrer Daro

I meant carrera del daro, which runs along the river and has amazing views of the Alhambra. I've seen some really cool apts. there on vrbo.com.

Thanks so for the help. So many of the places say "in the heart of the Albaicin". Any guidance on how to know what is safe and what is not? We aren't too timid, but don't want to have the kids in a place where something might happen.

We stayed in Granada for a week last May and walked through the Albaicin area most evenings either as a couple or with friends. On no occasion did we feel threatened or worried. The graffeti is extensive and disconcerting but the people are friendly.
If you stay on the Cuesta del Chapiz you will be on the edge of The Albaicin and have a long walk to the centre of town and a steep climb to the Alhambra although there are plenty of small buses that make the journey.
The Carrera del Darro can be noisy with groups of people walking home at about 2 am (or later) but they all seemed very good humoured.
Make sure that every one gets a copy of the very useful free map of Granada and you should be able to find your way through the maze of streets very easily.
Have fun and do not worry - Granada is a great city which feels no more dangerous than any university town with lots of young people out enjoying themselves.

You would be surprised the area near cuesta del chapiz is very peaceful and quiet and doesn't feel like a city at all. On trip advisor some posters that live in Malaga say they wouldn't stay there but I would. However cuesta del chapiz is near the top of a very big hill and it is a long tiring walk into town. I wouldn't worry about kids, they're not known for carrying a lot of money and muggings generally are not violent like in the U.S. and would only occur later at night if a person is walking alone.
