GPS in car rentals
My husband and I are picking up a rental car with a GPS included from Hertz at FCO and heading up to Brunello land for a few days.
Has anyone used the GPS that comes with the rental cars? Are they pretty straight forward to use? Anything we should keep in mind?

Generally, yes, GPS units are pretty straightforward to figure out. It does help to learn how to toggle the language. Right & left are understandable in many languages but programming a GPS is easier if you can read all the screen menus.
GPS are great for telling you where you are, but they're not all created equal for driving directions. There can be more than one way to get from a to b. As zeppole said you'll still need a map and to watch road signage, plus a general idea of the route you want to take.

I put the extra $$$$ into something I will OWN, and use my own laptop running Microsoft.com/AutoRoute. You can get used to operating it prior to departure if you download a 60-day demo of its American cousin here: microsoft.com/streets/en-us/trial.aspx
I don't get buying equipment for car rental companies.
