GPS Garmin or TomTom
Hi
I found a cheap Garmin gps $80 on Amazon and I was thinking of buying the Europe map from Garmin for $70. I was wondering if the map for TomTom is better. I seem to have read on the web that TomTom was more detailed. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks |
Just returned from using two Garmin Nuvi units in rental cars in Tuscany and in Bavaria. The maps had more than enough detail both out in the countryside as well as in the cities. Certainly a LOT better than using the detailed roadmaps I had brought along so that I never needed them at all.

Thanks
I am interested in Turkey. The Garmin Europe map has close to 100% coverage in some countries and 63% coverage in Turkey. |
I have heard Garmin's maps are usually superior to TomTom, while TomTom usually has easier to use units with more functions for the same price. I have a Garmin because map quality is the most important to me.

I decided to wing it without the GPS. 63% coverage isn't enough reason to drop the $90 for the GPS and $70 for the Europe Garmin map

Keep looking... I recently replaced my low end TomTom One with a TomTom 920 with both N. America and European maps for just 80 bucks CDN on eBay.
Works perfectly. |
I am easily swayed. I bid on a used Tomtom 920 on Ebay, but there is 3 days left on the auction. What does CDN stand for/

Love my TomTom that comes with EU and Eastern Eu maps already installed so don't have to buy maps. I don't recall the number of the TomTom but as I've now been using it in both Europe and USA happily for 3 years the model number has probaably changed. Last year in Rome my husband and I were lost looking for a small restaurant in the area of Trastevere. I set the TomTom to the "walking" mode and plugged in the name of the restaurant...it never ceases to amaze me as it found a satellite rigtht away and magically - seems like magic to me - directed us to the door of the restaurant.

James_P. I believe CDN means Canadian currency.
|
Yes... CDN is the Canadian dollar. Hope you have success on that auction... watch out for last minute snipers! ;^)
