got that great fare to zurich...now what?
I have a family trip planned for mid-june. We are flying in to zurich and renting a car. The tentative schedule is as follows:
Day 1-2: Arrive Zurich early morning and drive to Hohenschwangau, Germany. (Am bringing 3 young girls...the castle is a must). How many nights do you recommend here? I was thinking no more than 2 nights.
Here is where I just cannot decide...Day 3:: Drive from Hohenschwangau to either Innsbruck (only 1 1/2 hrs.) or Salzburg (farther). Which would this forum recommend? Am considering Innsbruck due to the Hungerburg furnicular...Is this worth a visit? Again, am trying to please 3 young girls. 4 nights there.
Day 6.Drive from Innsbruck to Milan and Como region. 4 nights there.
Day 9-10 Travel back to Zurich for return flight. 1 night zurich.
Are there any great stops in between these places? Also, is there an alpine slide in Como or Innsbruck?
Thanks.

My advice is to start in Luzern for 2 days after you land--it is only 1:20 from the airport by train. Then get the car and drive to Lago Como via Lugano, and then drive via the Engadine valley to Reutte or Fussen to see the castle country. That is a better loop. I would forget Innsbruck.

Hi,
There's a luge ride (Sommerrodelbahn) and cable car 1 mile from Neuschwanstein at Tegelberg.

If you send some extra nights in the Fuessen area, the Zugspitze cable car in Ehrwald, Austria is close by. This is Germany's highest mountain which is shared with Austria. Also the Wieskirche is amazing and close by also. The outside is subtle, the inside is simply spectacular!

Check out the "panaramic view" button to see the interior.
"Mad" King Ludwig's Linderhof Palace is also in the area.

I agree with skipping Innsbruck. Take a night or two from there and add it to Fuessen and...
this is just a suggestion... in place of Innsbruck, stay in the Val Gardena area of the Italian Dolomites! Just an hour and a half south of Innsbruck. Spectacular scenery!!! Brixen/Bressanone is a terrific old town and you could also see the "Ice Man" in Bozen/Bolzano.

Skip Innsbruck and Salzburg. You only have 10 days. Visit Switzerland and the castles. Mid-June hotels shouldn't be fully booked so you can play a bit by ear. Follow the weather a bit too. Sometimes there's terrible weather in the north and fantastic weather in the south.
