google earth to see whats REALLY around your hotel

Checked a hotel area once on googleearth. All the community posts around it said, "great" bars and nightclubs. We booked another hotel. When we went, we checked out the original. Thank you thank you googleearth!!!

Huh? Most of us around here use http://photos.pagesjaunes.fr

Point was, hotel websites are always self serving. What they say are lots of restaurants and cafes nearby can end up bars and nightclubs.

I take the community posts with a pinch of salt - I'm just looking at Edinburgh and there's no mention of bars - and someone has put Edinburgh Zoo on George Street.

Perhaps it's a reference to the Stag & Hen crowds at weekends?

The posts can be off the mark, but when you can hardly see the hotel for the "bars and nightclubs" markers you have to wonder.

Bear in mind that the google earth photos in many cases are several years old.

N° = number

Rue = street

Rechercher = search

Going to France, are you?

I can confirm that Pages Jaunes reacts very quickly, because I sent them en e-mail to tell them that my building had been renovated and didn't look at all like the photo. They wrote back and said the address had been added to the "update" list and within 2 months there was a new photo on the site.

Two months? You must have clicked the "Express Service" box.

Would anyone really want to be a pagesjaunes photographer? "I could have been a Doisneau, a Brassai, and here I am getting run down by cars and a crick in the neck trying to get all the building and no people in the picture"

kerouac Mar 5th, 2007 09:13 AM

They are really not artists -- often there is a big truck in the way or some really ugly parked cars. But I guess that digital photography has really made their job a lot easier, hence the quick updates.
