Google Earth!
Go to googleearth.com and download the free software. It's incredible! You can type in any address or city and it will zoom on the location from planetary scale down to street level!
|
Google is the best company ever. Google earth has been very important in helping to identify houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. People in other regions of the country have used googleearth to figure out if their house was destroyed.
also, gmail, google's e-mail, is far superior to any other web-based e-mail. excellent search feature and extremely large storage. just started using google talk and talk to my husband while we're at work periodically throughout the day. no wonder google is at over $500/share. |
I must be absolutely computer-illiterate :(
I opened Google, searched for GoogleEarth, and it took me to EarthGoogle, is this right? There I got offers of all kinds of downloads... but how can I look up my address? I didn't see a type-in window :( |
Try Google Earth. Two words. Go to the home page. In the upper right hand corner is a space to click for the free download.
Have fun! :-) |
Oh, so without downloading I can't use it? It makes me not so illiterate :)
I can't download anything on my business computer :( |
yes, you have to download it
you don't have a temp. folder on your business computer? i guess that's just a company policy to prevent too much comp. time |
i guess that's just a company policy to prevent malware from infecting the business recordkeeping
|
I don't know the reason, but as long as I can keep this site opened all day, I will not ask any questions :)
|
You really don't have to download it, at least for some functionality. Go to maps.google.com and put in your address. You can then click over to satellite photos and see. Some areas are better resolution than others.
|
JLM, THANK YOU! My house looks much better from the ground up then on this satellite, but... at least I know how :)
|
The real fun is with Google Earth, though. Worth downloading. You pick the altitude and speed at which you want to "fly" over an area. A virtual balloon ride over Venice or Paris is pretty cool, for example...
|
Aargh! No Mac version!
|
Hello Worktowander,
The Mac version is now not available to use but they are developing. You can check it out from this website. If it done, it will available from here. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20124 |
You guys need to zoom in to the Grand Canyon on GoogleEarth. Its in 3-D and you can literally "fly" into and around the Grand Canyon. Nice!
|
Contain the enthusiasm!! I tried to look at my house, but our region is :not available for access" yet. No, I don't live in Siberia or Pyongyang. I live in Western Michigan. Must be because it's west of the Hudson river, outside the beltway, and not in CA.
|
I think it's western Michigan that's the problem ;)
Google Earth clearly shows my vacation property in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of Colorado. |
Hey, have you ever been to the Western Michigan Triangle? Our subdivision is called Area 52
|
Very cool, but the pics are not current. Our house doesn't have a fence, but it does now. Fun though. Thanks for sharing.

I just downloaded it and having fun with it right now.

A couple of weeks ago my mom flew up to NJ. After I'd come home from dropping her off, I launched Google Earth and went to this website where you can do live real-time flight tracking! It was really cool to watch the progress of the flight, vary the angles, etc. I suggested she do that when my sister and I head off to Paris on September, but somehow I don't think she will (she's not too comfortable using computers). Still...it is neat to track a loved ones flight to make sure they make it to their final destination ok. :)
