Goodbye Paris! I'm talking destruction...
 

Paris is not a museum, as much as a lot of people would like it to be. Buildings are torn down all the time and replaced by other things.

I went to a jazz club in the Marais, the 7Lizards.
I read they are tearing it down and making a small park. True?

Haven't heard about that, but I'll try to check it out.

Seems sad to see old places being destroyed, but maybe necessary? I hope what goes up will be in keeping with the rest of the neighborhood.

Not everything is worthy of being saved. But I am always happy when they can save the façade of a building, which they often try to do.

I see the signs say "Votre Quartier Se Transforme". What is it transforming into? Is this a major urban renewal project?

I am reminded of the signs of my youth in New York: Dig We Must.

Actually, it is "transforming" because it is near a ton of railroad yards which the city will be nibbling over the next few years, with a university center, the biggest youth hostel in Paris, more parks, and a big artist center powered by solar energy. There will even be a new RER station in the neighborhood in a few years (on the RER E line).

In some older U.S. cities,with historical districts, new construction must match the style of the neighborhood. Is that the case in Paris?

We're going to be staying in between Bastille & Republique again (same neighborhood we stayed in on our first Paris trip in 1998) for 3 nights in May. Oberkampf metro It will be fun to see how it's changed. We walked through there 2 years ago and it was getting kind of nice...there were a lot of semi-non-descript facades though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some changes their either.

Even if I lived close by, I doubt I would have noticed like K did. So interesting. I need to be more observant.
