Hello,
I'm a 19 year-old American taking a 4-day trip to Stockholm next week (flying into Skavska from Brussels). This will be my first time in Scandinavia--does anyone have suggestions for good walks/neighborhoods or places to see? I'll be travelling alone without a car or a lot of money. Should I do a day excursion to Uppsala or another nearby town? Thanks !

The Vasa museum is a great thing to see, and I am not a real museum fanatic. Otherwise, just strolling the "old city" is so neat.

Ditto on the WASA. Fascinating story and ship. You will enjoy this.

Walk around the old town area. They also have a tour of the castle outside of town. Beautiful area.

stpaulflavor: Stockholm is very walkable. You will want to wander the old town (Gamla Stan), take in the changing of the gaurd at the palace (at noon and different than any other you might have seen), go to the Vasa Museum (it houses a 17th century ship that sunk on its maiden voyage and was raised and restored; fascinating), spend at least a half day at the Skansen (open air, folk museum with buildings, gardens, docents in costume, cafes and restaurants, etc.), take a harbor tour out into the archipelago aboard one of the tour boats you can catch in the innerharbor) and, spend some time at the Sergaels Torg (modern Stockholm in a series of underground malls).
For just people watching, spend some time at Kungstradgarden, The King's Garden' with concerts, life-size chess boards, sausage carts and other fast food facilities. This is on the edge of the harbor and you can catch one of the harbor tours from here as well.
Uppsala has a wonderful Cathedral and one of the oldest Universities in Europe, but not much else.
While I haven't used them, Stockholm has some of the best hostels in Europe. So, you can eat and sleep cheaply and probably connect with other young travelers as well. Go to a TI and they will help you find a place at one of the hostels.
Picnic goodies are available everywhere, small stores, department stores, markets, etc.

Ditto on the Vasa. Also the Gamla Stan (old town) is a great place for walking. My friend and I rented bicycles and had a wonderful time touring the public parks where there are lots of well-maintained bike paths.
