Good travel pants?

I'm looking for some good pants for my my trip to Europe in a week.

Price isn't an issue, but I'd like to keep it cheaper if possible.

Anybody have any suggestsions as to pants that will fair well in London/Paris?

treplow Jan 7th, 2006 02:40 PM

I found the pants by Travel Smith hold up well in travel

For men or women???

bamassippi Jan 7th, 2006 02:44 PM

Men.

Where are you from?
"Pants" doesn't mean the same thing in all countries (trousers in the US, but
underwear in the UK).

Is there some special feature that you feel you need that you don't already have in your wardrobe?

bamassippi Jan 7th, 2006 02:48 PM

I'm just sick of travelling in jeans (uncomfortable, heavy, etc.) I'm looking for "trousers" that will be ideal for someone trabelling in London/Paris during the nect two (cold) months.

Don't you wear ordinary cotton or wool trousers sometimes? That is all you would need. Go to any department store or even a Banana Republic sort of store.
I never buy clothes in Travel stores..they are usually just overpriced and not anything special..
You might want something with some spandex in them so they don't wrinkle so badly and stretch a little when you sit down a lot.
JJill, Chicos, sell soft, loose sort of clothes that are good for travel.
I cannot say if the clothes are that great, they are always too big on me..but they seem to be perfect for travel.
Have fun shopping!

Since bamassippi said he was looking for men's clothes, I don't think Chicos or jjill are good options.

Get yourself four pair of big daddy sweatpants in assorted colors and be done with it.

Seriously, listen to Scarlett.

SeaUrchin Jan 7th, 2006 03:41 PM

well, degas, he will have an interesting trip if he wears pants from jjill and chicos! I would like to read his trip report though.

My DH travels in khakis -- comfy and they can be dressy or casual. Look for something that doesn't need to be ironed.

degas Jan 7th, 2006 03:58 PM

SeaUrchin, that Chico's site is pretty sexy.

Scarlett Jan 7th, 2006 05:42 PM

LOL, yes, I see that I skipped that point :D

Part of my answer still stands then lol, go to a department store. They carry mens trousers.

My favorite travel trousers are lightweight menswear style wool with a bit (3-4%) lycra. They are comfortable, don't wrinkle and can be spot washed if necessary. I've found that a bit of lycra is very good at keeping your wardrobe looking fresh, not like you're living out of a crammed bag. The wool means you can hang things and any wrinkles that may occur will hang out overnight. I pack a molded plastic hanger (the kind that are 3/$1.00). The size of the cross rod is enough to prevent any hanger crease when you fold them over. Hang them in the bathroom while you shower - there is enough humidity to "press" your pants. I have purchased them at JJill, Eddie Bauer, Chico's and The Gap. I have them in black, grey and camel but usually opt for the black ones. By the way they are warm in the winter (I wear tights underneath) but they also go with me to Italy in July. Fine, light-weight wool is very comfortable year-round.

Another vote for having pants with a small percentage of lycra in them. I recently bought some ladies trousers - being a lady - and they had 4% lycra in the material and it was like wearing nothing after a while. They moved with me and stretched with me, sooo comfy. Make sure you go with a lycra mix.

degas Jan 7th, 2006 08:03 PM

A lycra mix? The gal at walmart gave me a funny look when I asked for that kind.

SeaUrchin Jan 7th, 2006 09:32 PM

Scarlett, he would have been quite the dandy, lol.

Scarlett Jan 7th, 2006 09:34 PM

SeaUrchin..with all the fussing about what Americans wear in Europe..maybe it would have helped our image LOL

dockers are not usually my favorite, but they make the perfect, perfect travel pants. they may not be making them, but if you look at ebay item 8376170590 in the next couple of days, you can view a pair. they have a totally hidden zipper in the sideseam mid-leg. otherwise look like normal pants (dressier in black, everyday in khaki.) my husband has several pair that he saves just for travel.
k.

This will sound silly for winter, but even then the perfect pants for travel is one of the classier versions of the zip off ones convertable to shorts. Why for winter - well, you may get some terrible stain where laundry service is inconvenient or astronomically expensive. With zip off, you can isolate a small part of the dirty part which will fit more easily in a sink for easy hand wash and dry. Furthermore, it's extra pockets meant for storing the zip off parts are extremely handy for maps, brochures, etc.

And later for warmer weather they are a dream come true, where you can be cool, then pop the bottoms on for church requirements or cooler evenings. Locally I have trouble finding the better, more adult looking of these zip pants; can anyone recc a web site with nicer ones like you see Europeans wearing?
