Good Tour of Paris?
My husband and I are exploring Paris for the first time. We will be there a week, but want to spend the first day or so with a tour group to get our bearings and to see as much as we can. Does anyone know a good tour group for Paris?

Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the tour company - our hotel set us up - but it was great. Your hotel will probably know.

It was a night tour and absolutely beautiful. It was a small van, 6 people, so very personal. We stopped and got out at a couple of the sights for pictures. It lasted about an hour.

After that tour, I knew why they called Paris the city of lights and the most beautiful city in the world!

Hello, Kim.
Cityrama, Touringscope, and Pariscope all have city tours of Paris. I don't have the phone numbers, but they can all be reserved at the Tourist Office on the Champs Elysees.
Another convenient way to orient yourself to Paris is to take one of those buses that goes to all the tourist sights. I can't remember the name, but it's a huge double decker red bus. You pay a small fee per day to use this bus all day long. They do have commentaries in English.
I hope this helps.

Hi Kim
You are very smart to spend your first day in Paris getting your bearings. My best advice would for you to go to the website http://www.parisplus.com/prod.html and over to the left of the screen there is a yellow box - click on "Paris Pass Specials" There is a tour called L'Open Tour which is a hop-on, hop-off bus tour of the city. A wonderful double-decker bus tour of Paris lasting 1 1/2 hours (if you don't get off the bus), commentary in English & French. Board at any major site in Paris (you get a map with all the stops); and get on and off the bus as you please. We purchased the 2 day pass last September and it was one of the smartest things we did. You can feel secure ordering from the website; we purchased the bus tour, our museum passes (at the time they were cheaper than if we had purchased them in Paris - but check the current rates) and a Paris by night tour. All the documents were delivered to our hotel and were waiting for us upon arrival, no glitches, no surprises. Sure we could have ran around and purchased the tickets when we got there, but we didn't want waste time wondering where to get tickets for these events, etc. I recommend the museum pass is you are visiting several museums. Also, try to plan a "loose" itinerary, just so you make sure you are able to see the things that are important to you, because before you know it , it will be time to go home! Have a fantastic time.

sounds like fran, immediately above, works for the travel agency whose products she touts. hoew does SHE know the website is truly secure?

There is no "running around" to purchase these services. You can pay as you get on the L'Opentour bus even by credit card. The museum pass is available at large metro stations or at the museums. You might choose a museum like the Rodin to buy it since the line will not be long. It would be unusual if ordering over the internet was the same or less price--it is usually about 30% more.

Ok - wait a minute, I would like to tell r([email protected]) (see above) that I DO NOT work for the tour company I spoke of and I think it is very rude of you to make such assumptions - who do you think you are? The reason I know it is secure is that I used it this summer, and I'm really sorry to disappoint you, but it worked just great! Also, Gretchen, I cautioned in my post to compare the prices for purchasing the passes at home vs. in Paris. At the time we went, we actually saved money (sorry you decided we didn't), and I didn't wait in line for my batobus ticket, my museum pass, or my Paris at night tour. I also purchased concert tickets and didn't wait in line for them either and if I HAD waited until I got there to purchase those, I would have missed the concert because by then it was sold out. And I did not over-pay. You have to compare your prices and use common sense, the passes etc. were more expensive on other sites I looked at, this one was reasonable at the time. Another bonus was having my tickets/passes cut down on the number of times I had my wallet or credit card out in public. Of course you can purchase tickets when you get there, there is nothing wrong with that, I was simply sharing my experiences and giving Kim some options. Kim, if I can answer any other questions for you, or if want my e-mail address I'm happy to send it to you, just ask! Also, please let us know about your trip!

Just wanted to let you know that we used a personal guide spotted here on the board, named Michael/[email protected]
He gave us an all day tour of outdoor markets, Samarataine store view, Louvre, Orsay, Mephisto shoe store (9 a.m.-8 p.m.). $60 for the day and well worth it. He is really a go with the flow kind a guy, knows the city well and his knowledge of the art museums are his forte (helped make these two museums more manageable)
