Good source for trip insurance?
We are going to Ireland for 2 weeks, and are thinking about getting trip insurance. We are particularly interested in getting insurance which would help with health care bills, if any occur during our trip. What are some good sources for health insurance? What should we look for in a good policy? Thanks very much for your help with planning our dream vacation.

Look at insuremytrip.com, which allows you to compare a multitude of policies. Note that most companies will not cover pre-existing conditions unless you purchase their insurance within 10 to 15 days of the final payment for your trip.

We use TravelGuard. We have never made a claim, so I can't comment first hand about how they are to deal with on that end other than what I read online (which has been good).
The coverage for pre-existing conditions is if you purchase insurance 15 days after your INITIAL payment for a trip, not the final payment.

I also have used Travel Guard. We did have to cancel a trip to China after we had prepaid $500. My travel companion (my sister) had a heart attack.
They paid our claim quickly and with no problem. Since then, if I have prepaid substantial sums, I always insure with them. It's a comfort to me knowing that if I have a medical problem, or if I die while traveling, they'll take care of it, and even get me home.
I think in the future, even if I haven't prepaid, I'll get a policy that would cover repatriation of remains. I'll get the cheapest policy I can find, as long as it will do that.

I bought this with my USAIR ticket to Italy in May. My Mom died while there. It was a pain getting reimbursed and took two transactions but they came through.I had to send a copy of my return tickets, death certificate, hotel in Rome which was 240.00 euro at the Hilton airport and the rental car expense. I think the limit was 1340.00 and I got it all. USAIR charged me a huge amount of money for my ticket, my original was 1300.00 so they credited me for 650.00 but them added on the price of a ticket for buying that day...plane was half full plus 250.00 change fee. They did give me that back. I had paid for the apartment but was happy to get some money back for travel expenses. My friend had a heart attack last year three days before we were to leave for Scotland and Ireland. They tried saying she knew she was going to have open heart surgery! Her Doctor had to write letters. I bought trip insurance on our Dublin to Edinburgh flight and they did not honor that insurance because we were from the USA and I bought the tickets from the Aer Lingus Euro sight. Go figure. It was 80 euro so no big deal. I think it paid for itself this time and would do it again.

I used to use Access America and they paid one claim quickly and without hassle. I now buy Travelguard because we prefer their plan, but we haven't filed a claim so I can't speak for their response and payout.
